AIRPORT MAINTENANCE WORKER

DEFINITION

Under direction, to inspect, maintain and repair buildings, grounds, paved surfaces and equipment; to operate a variety of tools, equipment and heavy motorized vehicles; and to do related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Primary emphasis is upon working independently to perform inspection, maintenance, and repair tasks or assisting others in the performance of more difficult mechanical, electrical or building trades repair work; occasionally makes work assignments and supervises other employees in specific tasks; operates heavy motorized vehicles, including snow plows and blowers, front end loaders, sweepers, and tractors; performs concrete and asphalt work, painting, plumbing, snow removal, mowing, layout work, inventory and record keeping.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education and Experience: High school graduation or its equivalency and four years of experience in the construction and maintenance of buildings and grounds, including operation of heavy-sized motorized equipment. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in construction, maintenance and repair of buildings, structures, paved and unpaved surfaces and general grounds areas; skill in the operation of heavy-sized construction and maintenance equipment, especially during adverse weather conditions; ability to operate mowers, tractors, trucks, plows, snow blowers, sweepers, painting machines, loaders, forklifts, rollers, spreaders, jackhammers, sprayers, crack sealers and other equipment of similar size and complexity; ability to service and to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and assist with major maintenance of equipment; knowledge of traffic regulations as they apply to the safe operation of motorized construction and maintenance equipment; ability to perform heavy manual work; ability to work in severe weather conditions; ability to make building and building systems repairs; ability to be innovative and work without close supervision; ability to assign and direct the work of others; ability to communicate using two-way radio; ability to utilize a personal computer; ability to communicate tactfully and courteously with the public and co-workers; ability to reorganize daily work schedule depending on staffing and/or activity in area; ability to be safety conscious at all times regarding physical activity (lifting and moving items); ability to reason and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form; mental ability to address potential adverse or negative situations that may arise from time to time; ability to make independent decisions, follow instructions, accept constructive criticism and be able to project a positive image of the facility to customers; must be dependable, reliable and have a previous history of good attendance and punctuality; must be able to attend staff meetings and training meetings as required; knowledge of and ability to operate ladders and lifts.

Special Requirements: Must possess a valid Wisconsin class “A” commercial driver’s license (CDL) with “N” (tanker) endorsement. Must pass Transportation Security Administration (TSA) required criminal history records check and employment history verification. Random drug and alcohol testing required. Must be available and willing to work nights, holidays and weekends during snow and other airport emergencies.
