JOB CONTENT
Key Performance Areas (4 – 6) / % of time spent / Activities / Objectives / Tasks / Results / Outcomes / Competencies1) ManageRIAL responsibilities: / Managing the professional and administrative members of staff of the Law Clinic, presently comprising 3 supervising attorneys and one candidate attorney as well as one administrative assistant. The duties include holding regular group staff meetings to discuss matters of general concern within the Law Clinic, as well as occasional meetings with individual staff members to discuss specific problems and issues as they arise;
Conducting H.R. required procedures, such as advertising for and recruiting new professional staff as necessary (historically, one candidate attorney per annum and other attorneys as required); conducting performance evaluation procedures (and, where necessary, performance improvement procedures and disciplinary procedures);
Supervising the work of all Legal Practice course students, with the assistance of other supervising attorneys; endeavouring to maintain an open-door policy aimed at facilitating students’ consultations with the director at any time; overseeing all the evening satellite clinics held at Athlone, Retreat and Ocean View; overseeing all the client files dealt with by the Clinic;
Monitoring the administrative procedures within the Clinic, including record keeping, venue planning, advertising of evening clinics, organisation of Mock trials;
Organising the First Year Court Tours for the Law Faculty;
Monitoring and reporting on the finances of the Clinic;
Promoting the Law Clinic at faculty, university, student and community level: giving talks, writing letters, attending meetings, organising faculty teas; writing articles.
2) CO-ORDINATION OF LEGAL PRACTICE COURSE (RDL4203H): / Planning the course curriculum for each year;
Organising, promoting, supervising evening clinics;
Preparing the course lectures;
Delivering one double lecture per week;
Preparing assignments;
Organising and invigilating the midyear Mock Trial;
Organising visiting lecturers programme;
Conducting the mid-year Oral examinations;
Setting and invigilating the Final Examination;
Appointing and liaising with the External Examiner;
Marking Final Examination;
Finalising year marks, monitoring passes and failures;
Drafting all notices and course descriptions for Faculty Handbooks, publicity, Faculty website, publications.
3) PROFESSIONAL MANAGEMENT OF ATTORNEYS’ PRACTICE: / Practising as a litigation attorney, including drafting pleadings, researching the law, advising students and clients, managing files, conducting litigation;
Supervising students and candidate attorneys, including providing training in office procedures and professional conduct; overseeing client files; advising on legal procedures and practices;
Attending and supervising at regular evening clinics in Athlone, Retreat and Ocean View throughout the academic year.
4)MONITORING & REPORTING ON FUNDING OF LAW CLINIC
5) reporting to Funders & ATTENDING MEETINGS: / Drafting reports to Attorneys Fidelity Fund and Law Society;
Attending meetings of Cape Law Society and Southern Suburbs Attorneys Association.
6) MEMBERSHIP OF COMMITTEES: / Representing the Law Clinic on various committees, including Law Faculty Board and Private Law Department committee.
Serving on additional committees within Faculty and university, as required.
