Hymn

Bishop Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

All Blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.

From Easter Day to Pentecost this acclamation follows

Bishop Alleluia. Christ is risen.

All He is risen indeed. Alleluia.

Bishop There is one body and one spirit.

All There is one hope to which we were called;

one Lord, one faith, one baptism,

one God and Father of all.

Bishop Peace be with you

All and also with you.

The Bishop welcomes the congregation and introduces the service.

Bishop God calls his people to follow Christ, and forms us into a royal priesthood, a holy nation, to declare the wonderful deeds of him who has called us out of darkness into his marvellous light.

The Church is the Body of Christ, the people of God and the dwelling-place of the Holy Spirit. In baptism the whole Church is summoned to witness to God’s love and to work for the coming of his kingdom.

To serve this royal priesthood, God has given particular ministries. Today, N begins a new ministry as a priest in this place. As members of the Church and local community we welcome him/her [and his/her family] among us. I ask you to pray with me that he/she may bring forth the fruits of the Spirit in the bond of peace, to the glory of God and for the well-being of this community.

The Patron or presenting Minister and Minister-designate stand before the Bishop.

Patron Right Reverend Father in God, I present NN to be inducted and installed as Vicar/Rector of this Benefice [or licensed as Priest-in-charge, etc.]

Bishop N, do you believe that God is calling you to this ministry?

Minister-designate

I do so believe.

Bishop Will you serve this community in faith and with joy?

Minister-designate

With the help of God, I will.

Bishop My brothers and sisters, will you support and uphold N in this ministry?

All We will.

Bishop Will you pray for him/her faithfully?

All We will.

The Collect

The Bishop introduces a period of silent prayer with the following bidding or other suitable words

Let us pray for N and for the ministry of the whole people of God.

The Bishop says either the Collect of the Day or this Collect

God our Father, Lord of all the world,

through your Son

you have called us into the fellowship

of your universal Church:

hear our prayer for your faithful people

that in their vocation and ministry

each may all be an instrument of your love,

and give to your servant N

now to be inducted/licensed

the needful gifts of grace;

through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ;

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

All Amen.

The Sermon

The Inauguration

Bishop My sisters and brothers, throughout the ages it has been the calling of the Church of England to glorify God and serve this nation through the faithful proclamation of the Gospel in worship, service, mission and pastoral care. Today, rejoicing in this tradition, and welcoming the opportunities of the years to come, we ask N to commit him/herself anew to this calling.

Therefore, let the declaration be made and subscribed and the oaths taken according to law.

Declaration of Assent

The Archdeacon or the Area Dean reads

The Church of England is part of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church worshipping the one true God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It professes the faith uniquely revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the catholic creeds, which faith the Church is called upon to proclaim afresh in each generation. Led by the Holy Spirit, it has borne witness to Christian truth in its historic formularies, the Thirty-nine Articles of Religion, the Book of Common Prayer, and the ordering of Bishops, Priests, and Deacons. In the declaration you are about to make will you affirm your loyalty to this inheritance of faith as your inspiration and guidance under God in bringing the grace and truth of Christ to this generation and making him known to those in your care?

Minister I, NN, do so affirm, and accordingly declare my belief in the faith which is revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the catholic creeds and to which the historic formularies of the Church of England bear witness; and in public prayer and administration of the sacraments I will use only the forms of service which are authorised or allowed by Canon.

The Minister-designate turns to face the congregation.

The Oath of Allegiance

I NN, do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, her heirs and successors, according to law. So help me God.

The Minister-designate faces the Bishop.

The Oath of Canonical Obedience

I, NN, do swear by almighty God that I will pay true and canonical obedience to the Lord Bishop of Durham, and his successors, in all things lawful and honest. So help me God.

The Minister-designate then signs the oaths and declaration.

Bishop As we prepare to institute (or license) N to this ministry, let us pray that the Holy Spirit will empower him/her and all of us in the service and love of God.

Kneel

Silence is kept.

This, or another hymn or song of invocation (see page 25 below), is sung.

Bishop Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire,

All and lighten with celestial fire;

thou the anointing Spirit art,

who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart.

Thy blessed unction from above

is comfort, life, and fire of love;

enable with perpetual light

the dullness of our blinded sight.

Anoint and cheer our soilèd face

with the abundance of thy grace:

keep far our foes, give peace at home;

where thou art guide no ill can come.

Teach us to know the Father, Son,

and thee, of both, to be but One;

that through the ages all along

this may be our endless song,

Praise to thy eternal merit,

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

John Cosin, Bishop of Durham 1660-1672

Bishop Almighty and loving Father, giver of all that is good, hear our prayer for your servant NN, whom you have called to ministry in this parish. Strengthen N by your Holy Spirit. Fill him/her with love for your people. As a faithful priest and true servant of your Son, may he/she preach your word, minister your sacraments, and serve your people, to the glory of your name; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All Amen.

The Institution or Licensing

The Bishop sits and the Minister-designate continues to kneel. The Bishop reads the Deed of Institution or the Licence and then hands it to the Minister-designate and says

Bishop NN, receive the cure of souls (or this ministry) which is both mine and yours; in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Bishop stands and blesses the new Minister

God give you the spirit of holy discipline, of faithfulness, and of love for all his people; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you always.

All Amen.

The Induction (The Induction is omitted at a Licensing; in which case, the service continues with the Installation)

Remain standing

Bishop Archdeacon, I now require and authorise you to induct NN into the real and actual possession of the Church and benefice, and to support N in it.

A procession of Archdeacon, Churchwardens, and Incumbent moves to the church door. The congregation faces the church door.

Archd’n By the authority of the Bishop, I N, Archdeacon of N, induct you, N, into the real and actual possession of the Parish Church of N with all the rights and responsibilities belonging to it.

The Archdeacon lays the hand of the Incumbent on the door handle

A Churchwarden says,

N, receive these keys, and let the doors of this place be open to all people: and may the Lord preserve your going out and your coming in as you share with us in ministry in this place.

The Incumbent rings the church bell to signify his acceptance of pastoral care of the people of the parish

The procession returns to the front of the nave.

The Installation

Where appropriate, the Archdeacon places the newly Instituted or Licensed parish priest in his/her seat.

Archd’n I place you, N, in the seat that belongs to the priest of this parish. May the Lord bless you and keep you and make his face to shine upon you.

The Prayers

The newly Instituted or Licensed priest, with one or more members of the congregation, leads the Intercession.

Minister In the power of the Spirit, and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father.

Kneel

The prayers conclude with the Lord’s Prayer.

Minister As our Saviour taught us, so we pray

All Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours

now and for ever.

Amen.

(or)

Minister Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us

All Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come;

thy will be done;

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation;

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

the power and the glory,

for ever and ever.

Amen.

The Welcome

The Area Dean invites representatives of other local Churches, the local community, and the Deanery to welcome the new priest.

Stand

Hymn (during which a collection is taken for the Diocesan Ordination Candidates’ Fund)

The Commission

The new Minister, and where appropriate, others with responsibility for public ministry in the benefice stand before the Bishop.

Bishop People of God, and all who minister in the Parish (Parishes) of ….., will you work with your new Incumbent (Priest-in-Charge, Team Vicar, etc), to build up the body of Christ in this place, to grow God’s kingdom, to care for one another, and to show forth the love and glory of God.

All With the help of God, we will.

Bishop Father of all,

your kingdom has drawn near in Jesus your Son,

a kingdom of righteousness and peace

and joy in the Holy Spirit;

restore, we pray,

the sacred flame of faith at the centre of our lives,

that as disciples and fellow-workers of Christ,

we may bear the fruits of righteousness,

to your praise and glory.

All Amen.

Bishop In our common commitment to God’s mission in this place, I invite N to proclaim the Gospel of the Great Commission.

New Minister Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.

All Glory to you, O Lord.

Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

All Praise to you, O Christ.

Bishop My brothers and sisters, will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers?

All With the help of God, we will.

Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord?

With the help of God, we will.

Will you proclaim by word and example the good news of God in Christ?

With the help of God, we will.

Will you seek and serve Christ in all people, loving your neighbour as yourself?

With the help of God, we will.

Will you acknowledge Christ’s authority over human society, by prayer for the world and its leaders, by defending the weak, and by seeking peace and justice?

With the help of God, we will.

The Dismissal

Bishop May Almighty God make you faithful to his calling,

cheerful in his service,

and fruitful for his Kingdom;

and the blessing of God almighty,

the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit,

be among you and remain with you always.

All Amen.

Minister Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.

All In the name of Christ. Amen.

or, from Easter Day to Pentecost

Minister Go in the peace of Christ. Alleluia, alleluia.

All Thanks be to God. Alleluia, alleluia.

The procession leaves the Church, the newly appointed Minister walking with the Bishop.
