Behavioral Objective: All students will identify what they learned from a nonfiction text by wondering about the text and sharing ideas from the text.

Anticipatory Set:

·  Previously we read The Art Lesson by Tomie dePaola.

·  Show the cover

·  Remind the students that this story is based on his own childhood

·  Show some illustrations in the story

·  What did we learn about the character Tommy in this book?

Input:

·  We are going to read a short biography of Tomie dePaola called, “Draw, Draw, Draw.”

·  A biography is nonfiction; therefore it is a true story about a person’s life.

·  What are some things you wonder about Tomie dePaola?

·  Turn and share with a partner, then call on a few student

·  Make a chart about What We Wonder about Tomie dePaola

·  During the reading we are going to stop and discuss we what learned.

·  This biography does not have illustrations so just use your imaginations to visualize as you read.

·  Stop after, “..and continued until he grew up, often performing onstage.”

·  What did you learn about Tomie as a child?

·  Turn and talk with your partner- then have students share

·  Then stop after, “One was Arnold Lobel, who wrote and illustrated the Frog and Toad series.”

·  What did you learn about Tomie in the part that I just read?

·  Turn and talk

Modeling:

·  Turn to last page of The Art Lesson and point to the symbol of the white bird with pink heart. When you read more books by him look for this symbol.

Guided Practice:

·  Go to the chart “What we Wonder About Tomie dePaola.”

·  What did we learn about Tomie that could help us answer some of the questons we had?

·  What did you learn about Tomie dePaola that surprised you?

Independent Practice:

·  Read their nonfiction books and use the different strategies they have been learning.

Closure:

·  Students share their category and one fact they learned while reading their nonfiction book.
