4.1 Practice HW: Determine proportional and non-proportional situations

We can use a proportion to solve a problem only if the situation is a proportional situation. NOTall problems are proportional! It is important that you know how to differentiate between the two.

1)Out of the 210 TVs for sale at Best Buy, 30 of them are HD. Circuit City has 25 HD TVs for sale in their stock of 250 TVs.
Do Best Buy and Circuit City sell proportional amounts of HD TVs? Yes No
Show work to support your answer.
2)Patrick plants some sunflower seeds in a pot. Once the plants begin to grow, he notices that the height of the plant increases by 2 inches each week. If the plant is 5 inches in week 3, Patrick wonders what the height of the plant will be in week 9.
Is this an example of a proportional or non-proportional situation? Explain how you know
orshow work to support your answer.
3)In one survey, 7 out of 10 students agreed that doing homework was very important. If 100 students were asked, how many students said doing homework was important?
Is this an example of a proportional or non-proportional situation? Explain how you know or show work to support your answer.
4)Imanimakes a fruit juice by mixing 3 cups of orange juice with 1 cup of cranberry juice. Jhoan wants to make a larger amount so he adds 2 more cups of orange juice and 2 more cups of cranberry juice. Did Jhoan create a mixture which is proportionate to Imani’s? Explain how you know or show work to support your answer.
5)A group of 5 musicians plays a piece of music in 10 minutes. Nashawn thinks it will take a group of 35 musicians 70 minutes to play the same piece of music.
Do you agree or disagree withNashawn? ______
Is this an example of a proportional or non-proportional situation? Explain how you know or
show work to support your answer.
6)Ms. Posluszny has dark chocolate and milk chocolate Hershey’s Bliss in her candy dish. She has 2 milk chocolate for every 1 dark chocolate. If there are 12 candies in the candy dish, how many are milk chocolate?
Is this an example of a proportional or non-proportional situation? Explain how you know or
show work to support your answer.
7)Izunique joins a gym. The gym charges a $25 registration fee. Then Megan pays $10 for each day she uses the gym. So far, Izunique has used the gym 5 days. Zitlali wonders how much she will pay if she uses the gym 10 days.
Is this an example of a proportional or non-proportional situation? Explain how you know orshow work to support your answer.

Throughout your mathematical career, you will encounter MANY word problems. For some of them –situations which you determine to be proportional - you will be able to set up aproportion which can then be used to solve the problem. So, based on the previous 6 problems and the discussions we have had so far in this unit:

How do determine whether or not a situation is proportional?
