Purpose / This unit standard is for people in the glazing industry.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare to handle, move, and store glass using overhead mechanical handling systems; and handle, move, and store glass using overhead mechanical handling systems.

Explanatory notes

1Definition

Worksite requirements–refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and procedures, work instructions, manufacturer’s specifications, product quality specifications, legislative requirements.

2All work to be done in accordance with the requirements of the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992.

Outcome 1

Prepare to handle, move, and store glass using overhead mechanical handling systems.

Evidence requirements

1.1Glass is inspected for damage before handling, moving and storing and any damaged glass is removed to designated location in accordance with worksite requirements.

1.2Pre-start checks of the overhead mechanical handling system and lifting gear ensure all components are in working order and operational in accordance with worksite requirements.

1.3Lifting gear selected meets requirements of glass in terms of size, weight, type of finish, and special characteristics of the glass.

Rangelifting gear may include but is not limited to – cranes, hoists, grabs, josters, vacuum lifters, straps or slings, pack lifters.

1.4Attachment of lifting gear to glass is done in accordance with worksite requirements.

1.5Path for movement of glass is checked before moving begins in accordance with worksite requirements.

Rangepath check includes but is not limited to ensuring path is – wide and high enough for clear movement of the glass, leads to the required location, is free from obstructions or other hazards.

1.6Arrangements at load delivery point meet requirements of the glass in terms of size, weight, type of finish, and special characteristics of the glass.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – racks, supporting frames, cutting or finishing tables or machines, trolleys, stillage, vehicles.

1.7Assistance to move glass is arranged to ensure that the process can be completed in a controlled manner without danger to people in the workplace.

Outcome 2

Handle, move, and store glass using overhead mechanical handling systems.

Evidence requirements

2.1Equipment is operated in accordance with worksite requirements.

2.2Load is lifted, moved, and unloaded or placed in accordance with worksite requirements without damage to the glass or the equipment, or danger to people in the workplace.

2.3Equipment used is checked on completion of work and is placed ready for reuse in accordance with worksite requirements.

Rangerequirements may include but are not limited to – fault reporting, replacement of worn or damaged gear, location of equipment when not in use.
