2007 “100% RAW” Teenage Nationals

FloridaState Championships

Saturday and Sunday, August 11 and 12

WestShore Junior/Senior High Schhol * Melbourne, Florida

Before we begin, please take a moment to say a prayer for the brave men and women serving in the Middle East. Their courage, and that of their families, is what affords us the opportunity to compete on a drug free platform in this great country. May God protect them, bless them, and bring them home safe!

The 2007 “100% RAW” Teenage Nationals & Florida State Championships was an awesome success! Seventy-one lifters competed in the two-day event that saw over one hundred FloridaState and fifty World records shattered! On behalf of the contest staff and the administrative team at West Shore Junior/Senior High School, I would like to say “congratulations” to all the lifters, and we hope to see everyone back for the “100% RAW” World Championships on December 1 and 2!

Teenage phenom Leslie Kutner of Oveido, Florida, and Specialist Marie Pritzl of the United States Army led the female contingent with four World Records apiece. Both ladies exhibited flawless technique in the three lifts and won Best Lifter honors. Eleven year old Katrina Thompson and teammate Courtney Viger, representing Wildcat Powerlifting, kept the local crowd alive as they broke World Records on nearly every attempt. Master lifter Jan Montgomery, representing Power in the Blood, judged, loaded, and broke two World Records in her “100% RAW” debut. Teammate and fellow Master lifter Kari Sabin moved down to the 181s and destroyed the record books in all three lifts to include a 195 reverse grip bench!

Returning to the platform after a five year absence, Wildcat Powerlifting 148 pounder Yanni Tshontikidis captured Best Lifter honors in the teenage division with lifts of 245, 165, and 405. Jon Landau of Deerfield Beach, Florida registered a perfect day, breaking two World Records en route to his 1440 total in the 198s and Best Lifter honors in the Open division. Yanni and Jon were joined by Steve Ryder of Power in the Blood(405, 410, 500, 1315 in the 220s), Nick Hammer (600, 425, 625, 1650 in the 275s), and Cody Yager of Power in the Blood (600, 415, 635, 1650 in the SHWs) as the weekend’s top male lifters.

West Shore Junior/Senior High School’s Wildcat Powerlifting, the host team for this weekend’s contest, captured the Teenage & Overall Mixed Team titles. Special thanks to West Shore principal Rick Fleming, facilities administrator Jim Melia, athletic director Stasia Burdett, and Head Custodian Gary Neff for affording the Wildcats the opportunity to introduce our great sport to Brevard County studentsand for the outstanding meet site they have made available to the federation.

Power in the Blood, a Florida-based, Submasters and Masters team (and our protégé and friend, Cody Yager), won the Submasters/Masters team title. The team consists of our contest staff, as all members are competitors as well as judges, spotters, loaders, etc. Congratulations and thanks to all the Power in the Blood lifters for your sweat and sacrifice:

Larry Bucchioni (judging and loading), Don Daube (judging and loading), Sam Gough (scoring and drug testing), Denise Graham (announcing and drug testing), Brian Kissel (loading), Dave Lhota (judging), Jan Montgomery (judging and loading), Mel Perez (judging), Mary Jane Quinn (photography), Steve Ryder (loading), Kari Sabin (breaking records), Mike Spadafora (loading), Bill Tinkler (still pulling big weight at 72 years young!), Caryn Tshontikidis (judging), and Cody Yager (breaking records).

In the push/pull category, eleven year old Paul Montgomery pulled an awesome 130 pound deadlift. Power in the Blood lifter Bill Tinkler fired up the crowd with his 215 bench and 325 deadlift in the 70-74 year old age group, and 198 pounder John Ruffalo’s 250 pound bench was good for a World Record in the 198s, 65-69 year old age group.

The contest also drew twenty-one benchers from several states. Jimmy May III of St. Simon’s Island, Georgia added to his string of Teenage World Records in the bench with a 190 pound effort in the 181s (12-13 year old age group). Jimmy was joined by Emont, Virginia’s Andy Kadick who pushed an awesome 380 pound World Record bench to win the 18-19 year old age group in the 220s. In addition, 181 pounder Stephen Judah was the top open bencher, pushing a 450 pound World Record on his final attempt! Keith Brantley set a World Record with his picture-perfect 315 pound bench in the 45-49 year old age group, 181 pound class, and seventy-two years young Master lifter Jerry Kluft of Boca Raton, Florida, push a massive 315 pound World Record bench in the 220s! North Port YMCA (North Port, Florida), led by Bob Hughston, captured the Men’s Bench title.

Finally, seven athletes competed in the Curl division, highlighted by a 140 pound World Record by Brian Kissel of Power in the Blood. Craig Thompson’s 120 pound curl in the 148s was equally impressive, and Keith Brantley showed perfect form again to win the 181s with his 120 pound curl.

In addition to the efforts of the Power in the Blood athletes, more thanks are due to Paul Montgomery (awards ceremony), Jackie Nochreiner (concessions and expediting), Kelly Quinn (photography), Sean Rauchfuss (judging, set up, and clean up), Sava Tshontikidis (concessions), Yanni Tshontikidis (judging and loading).

And even more thanks to “100% RAW” President Paul Bossi of Elizabeth City Trophy for the awards; Brigid and the folks at Sandpiper Screening for the Wildcat Powerlifting,Power in the Blood, and contest shirts; John Polak of PolakMade LLC for the incredible platform and warm-up equipment; and David, Mollie, and Mike Harrigan for donating the platform equipment in support of RAW lifting in the state of Florida.

Finally, thanks to our Armed Forces for preserving our freedom and defending our homeland – may God protect you and bring you home safe! And to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ – thank You for Your sacrifice on the Cross of Calvary. It is to Your glory and honor that we stand “Redeemed Among the World.”

God Bless, Spero
