Your final project for the Classification Unit will include a colorful drawing of an imaginary creature, invading a new habitat, its Latin name, its common name, and a list of at least three structural and behavioral adaptations which will allow it to survive in a new environment. Be sure to look at the Latin roots listed on the back for information to aid you with the binomial nomenclature. Materials for your final copy will be provided: a half-sheet of drawing paper or large index card, construction paper, colored pencils, and other necessary items.

Procedures:

  1. Think about how your alien invader is introduced, and where it is introduced. Draw a rough sketch of your alien invader on a separate ½ sheet of paper.
  2. List at least three (3) structural and behavioral adaptations that your creature has that allows it to survive in this new habitat.

  1. Color the creature and THEN draw its habitat around it.
  2. Look through the Latin roots and name your creature with a scientific name. (Be sure to write the scientific name correctly with the genus capitalized and thespecies in lower case. For example, a Red Maple is scientifically called Acer rubrum)
  3. Then write down a common name for your creature, based on its characteristics.
  4. Show your rough sketch, names, and characteristics to your science teacher for approval.
  5. Obtain the required materials for the final copy and complete the activity.
  6. Pass in the final copy with all required items to your science teacher.
