Week 3

You have now made it to the third week of the semester. Good job! By now, you should have settled into a routine related to classes and study time. Be sure to keep your momentum focused on being successful and not developing distractions. It is better to be “ahead” than “behind,” so make sure you stay up-to-date on your class reading assignments and weekly homework.

Now, let’s introduce you to some more strategies that will help you earn good grades and move you closer to graduation day! Please complete the following items this week.

  • Visit the Center for Learning and Advancement (CLA), which is located in the Williams Building on the east side of campus. The CLA provides free tutoring to all GCU students in a number of essential subject areas. The tutors are friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate about helping you be successful in class. Please stop by the CLA and become familiar with the facility. The staff can better assist you if you have 2-3 personal questions ready when you visit the CLA.
  • Attend a CLA Student Success webinar: Study Skills. Go to click the “Student Success Webinar” button to register for this webinar.
  • Visit the Student Life website at to join a student organization and/or intramural sport on campus.
  • Form study groups with peers for your “hard” classes and build 1-3 study group meetings into your weekly schedule. This is a great strategy for being successful and forming new friendships. Decide which classes will be your “hard” classes and ask 3-4 fellow students in your classroom if they would like to be part of a study group for that class. Next, find out a good time for everyone to meet a couple times a week, so that the study group can discuss what is happening in class. Use this as an opportunity to get help from your peers about some of the harder concepts or confusing ideas you might experience in class.

Journal Reflection- In the space below, please briefly answer each of the prompt questions.

  1. What did you learn about the Center for Learning & Advancement during your visit? For what subject areas do they have tutors? How do you book an appointment? What are the hours of operation when the CLA is open?
  1. List the names and contact info for the study group members in any of your “hard” classes, and the days/times/location where you will meet with them.
