Course Outline and Classroom Procedures

Spanish III Señora Telfer

Spanish III is a fun but busy year of Language study. The successful completion of this course will help determine the student’s eligibility for Spanish IV.

Students must BE RESPONSIBLE. This means students must come to class on time, prepared with materials and writing utensils, and an open mind and willing attitude. Always do homework!

Students must STAY ON TASK. Staying on task means using Spanish in class and working on Spanish, not any other subject; it means not being afraid to make mistakes…mistakes can be good.

Spanish III students should expect to have homework at least three times a week. Homework is a way to practice the concepts we learn in class. It helps to reinforce vocabulary, language rules, and gives the student a chance to use what they have learned. Homework will include written assignments, textbook activities, worksheets and studying. STUDENTS SHOULD STUDY 15-20 MINUTES PER NIGHT EVEN WHEN NO HOMEWORK IS ASSIGNED. Late or incomplete homework WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED unless the student was absent, in which case it is the student’s responsibility to get the assignment and do it within the allotted time (students know my rule is for as many days absent, there is that much time to make up work). Homework is all or nothing. No half credit will be given. Each student will receive a homework grade at the end of each marking period based on the number of assignments completed. Homework counts for 35% of the quarter grade (tests and quizzes count for the other 65%).

Unit and/or Chapter tests will be announced a few days in advance. Frequent quizzes will be given throughout the term and may be both announced and unannounced. Students should expect a quiz every day to be well prepared. Missed tests or quizzes must be made up within the allotted time; if not, it will count as a ZERO. If the student is aware of the test but is absent the day before a test is given, he/she will be required to take the test with the rest of the class or the day they return to school.

Projects will be assigned at least once a marking period. Projects will vary from individual to group activities. All projects will be graded and receive a test grade. There will be some class time to work on projects; however the majority of the work will be done at home.

Extra help is available upon request. Typically, Tuesday afternoons are my designated time, but I am willing to be flexible to accommodate hectic schedules. Just ask! THERE WILL BE NO EXTRA CREDIT!

Using the internet to translate is the equivalent of cheating. I will know if the student uses a translator. Cheating is not tolerated. Examples of cheating include: copying homework, giving or receiving test information, looking at someone’s test, having identical or nearly identical sentences in writing assignments, using a “cheat sheet” or writing on hands or clothing.

I want only the best for all of my students. I’ll do my job, students must do theirs! Here’s to a great year in Spanish III.

AT THE END OF THE YEAR, THERE WILL BE A NATIONAL SPANISH EXAM. THIS TEST TAKES THE PLACE OF THE STATE PROFICIENCY EXAM WHICH WAS DONE AWAY WITH IN 2010. THE EXAM IS ADMINISTERED IN MARCH-APRIL. THE STUDENTS WILL BE PREPARED FOR THIS TEST THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. MORE DETAILS WILL BE GIVEN DURING THE FOURTH QUARTER OF THE YEAR. A LOCAL FINAL EXAM WILL BE GIVEN DURING THE LAST WEEK OF CLASSES.

Just to reiterate the important points of this classroom outline:

  • There will be NO homework accepted late. If it’s not handed in when due, I will receive a “0” for the assignment.
  • There is NO extra credit that I can earn. If I do what is expected of me during the school year, I won’t need extra credit.
  • If I am absent, it is MY responsibility to get the missed work/assignments/notes from Mrs. Telfer. She doesn’t have to find me!
  • I have one day for every day absent to make up work. For example: If I’m absent for 3 days, I have 3 days to make up all work.
  • Lessons and Nurse’s Office visits do not excuse me from work. If I am in school, I am responsible for the class. It is my responsibility to get any assignments or notes before I leave school.
  • I am responsible for myself!
