Meeting Minutes, September 10, 2009

Members Present: Martha Jo Markey, Rick Bartels, Leota Fussell, Julie Price, Susan Barnes,

Raye Southwell, Kathy Severson, Minerva Ortiz, Daniel Dubbert

New Member:Daniel Dubbert

Members Not Present:Alice Brown, Carmen Rodriguez, Charles Priest, Debbie Markham, Maria Gonzalez, Jim Selph, Joan Raulerson,Lenora White, Leticia Cuevas, Mandy Hines, Maria Cruz, and Vernon Keen

The meeting was called to order by Mr. Bartels at 3:05 p.m.

Roll call was taken: Nine members present and twelve members absent.

Minutes of the January 26, 2009 meeting were read and approved as written.

Mr. Bartels opened nominations for new members to serve on the Division of Career and Adult Education Council. A motion was made and seconded to nominate Mr. Dan Dubbert for membership. The motion carried unanimously.

Mr. Vernon Keen asked to be removed from the membership list. The committee decided that a letter of appreciation should be given to Mr. Keen for the years of dedicated service to our school advisory council.

The council decided that at the next SAC meeting nominations of individuals for membership will be made. Several members will be contacted to determine if they wish to continue serving on the committee.

Old Business

Mrs. Markey distributed and reviewed the 2008-09 Division Improvement Plan (attached).

New Business

Mrs. Markey distributed and reviewed a Comparison of 2007-08 and 2008-09 data for the Division of Career and Adult Education (attached).

Mrs. Markey distributed and reviewed the 2009-10 Division Improvement Plan (attached). Susan Barnes made a motion to accept the Division of Career and Adult Education 2009-2010 Division Improvement Plan. The motion was seconded and carried unanimously.

Mr. Dubbert asked how the classes offered at the FamilyServiceCenter were made known to the community. At this time classes are advertised as follows:

  1. Through a publication of classes offered throughout the year.
  2. Articles appear in the local newspaper periodically about the vocational (nursing and administrative assistant classes) and academic offerings (GED, ABE, Family Literacy, and ESOL).
  3. Brochures of classes offered are distributed throughout the community and in local businesses.
  4. Agencies that offer financial assistance to students help to spread the word.
  5. An emphasis was placed on “word of mouth” advertising as being very effective.

Kathy Severson reported the Family Literacy program is now serving 21 families with 25 children.

Julie Price, LPN Instructor, reported that the 2009-2010 LPN class will soon complete ten weeks of clinicals and students have done an outstanding job.

Mrs. Price also reported that 100% of the students enrolled in the Practical Nursing program for the 2008-09 year passed the state boards and are now Licensed Practical Nurses. All twelve (12) are working as PN’s.

Minerva Ortiz of the Migrant Farm Workers Program located at SouthFloridaCommunity College gave a brief summary of the program and reported she still has funds available for this school year. She also reported that a “Career Day” is scheduled for September 11.

The next meeting date was scheduled for November 16, 2009, 2:30 p.m.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 4:05 p.m.
