Ella
Until the end of the novel, we don’t know why Miranda has been acting the way she has. Write a chapter in Ella’s voice and try to imagine a scenario, which has made her turn away from Via. / Mr. Tushman
Mr. Tushman seems to understand why Jack Will punched Julian in the face. Write a chapter in Mr. Tushman’s voice explaining his thoughts about both Jack & August. Also include what Mr. Tushman thinks about Julian’s mother’s e-mail and her requests to reevaluate August’s admission to Beecher Prep. / Supporting Characters
There are many other characters in the book that we did not hear from. For example; August’s mom, August’s dad, Julian, Charlotte, Ella, Mr. Tushman, Mr. Brown, Veronica, etc.
*Who else would you like hear from in the book?
*Why would you want them to have a chapter in the book?
*What would you want to know about this character?
*What unanswered questions do you have?
*What would you ask this character if you had a chance to meet them?
Mr. Browne’s Precepts
Mr. Browne’s precepts are discussed throughout the story. On page 65 August writes a precept on “being remembered for the things we do”.
Option 1: Create your own precept and write the meaning of it.
Option 2: Review Mr. Browne’s precepts and choose one to interpret the meaning of. Explain your idea of the meaning in your notebook. / Julian
Julian is an unlikeable character, however he has so much power and gets many of the students to follow his terrible actions.
*Why do you think people follow others, even when they know it’s the wrong thing to do?
*What do you think has influenced Julian’s development into being such a mean and unthinking bully?
*Do you think moving to a new school is very likely to improve his behavior and attitude? Why or why not? / Character Preference
Which character did you engage with the most? Why? Do you have any connections with this character?
Which character did you least like? Why?
Was there any characters that made you change your original opinion about them? What made you change your mind?
Which character do you wish you knew more about? Why?
Summer
Summer is described as a “saint” for hanging out with August.
*Do you think it’s “saintly” for hanging out with someone who has a disability? Why or why not?
* Would you hang out with someone who looks or acts differently due to a disability? / Charlotte
Charlotte’s character is very interesting. Auggie notices that although she is perfectly civil and polite in acknowledging him, but after their first meeting she never goes out of her way to speak or sit with him. She is perhaps very “typical” of many of us, who choose to remain polite but at the same time distant.
*What is your perception of Charlotte?
*Do you think she is right or wrong for how she acts towards Auggie?
*Do you think she was really “neutral” during the war? *How would you act if you were Charlotte? / Friendship
In the text, Jack betrays August on Halloween while hanging out with Julian. This incident almost forced August to not return back to school because of how hurt he was. However, Jack’s betrayal of August is eventually forgiven.
* Do you think that such forgiveness or understanding is a characteristic of true friendship?
* If you were August would you forgive Jack?
*Do you think that Jack is a true friend? Why or why not?
*Have you ever been in a similar situation? Explain.
