SPEC NOTE: This Section specifies acoustical units for direct application or for suspended ceiling systems, installation and application.

SPEC NOTE SUPPORT: This Section has been reviewed and updated with the assistance of PWGSC/RPS/AES/Buildings Directorate staff.

SPEC NOTE ENVIRONMENT: This Section specifies environmentally responsible material choices, including recycling and reuse options, and generally available disposal options. The inclusion of minimum recycled content in acoustical ceiling tiles provides efficient use of natural resources and diverts materials from the waste stream.

SPEC NOTE: Acoustical units to be installed in suspended ceiling systems must be correlated with the suspension systems in Section 09130 - Acoustical Suspension.

Part 1General

1.1SAMPLES

.1Submit samples.

.2Submit duplicate full size samples of each type acoustical units.

1.2REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS

.1Fire-resistance rated floor/ceiling and roof/ceiling assembly: certified by a Canadian Certification Organization accredited by Standards Council of Canada.

SPEC NOTE ENVIRONMENT: This section specifies environmentally responsible material choices, including recycling and reuse options, and generally available disposal options. The inclusion of recycled content provides efficient use of natural resources and diverts materials from the waste stream.

1.3WASTE MANAGEMENT AND DISPOSAL

.1Separate and recycle waste materials.

.2Collect and separate plastic, paper packaging and corrugated cardboard in accordance with Waste Management Plan

1.4ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

.1Permit wet work to dry before commencement of installation.

.2Maintain uniform minimum temperature of 15 deg C and humidity of 20 - 40% before and during installation.

.3Store materials in work area 48 hours prior to installation.

1.5EXTRA MATERIALS

.1Provide extra acoustical units amounting to 10% of gross ceiling area for each pattern and type required for project.

.2Extra materials to be from same production run as installed materials.

.3Clearly identify each type of acoustic unit, including colour and texture.

.4Deliver to the Owner, upon completion of the work of this section.

Perforations for air flow only required where ceiling as a whole is used for air distribution.

2.1MATERIALS

.1As indicated on drawings.

SPEC NOTE: Repeat the following paragraph when more than one type of acoustic unit is required and identify in heading.

SPEC NOTE: For decorative panels and tiles specify additional paragraphs to suit project.

SPEC NOTE: Specify acoustical media and spacers for metal pan and cementitious acoustic unit ceilings.

.2Fibrous acoustical media (sound batts): 90 mm thick x 610 mm x 1220 mm, flame spread rating of 10, and smoke developed rating of 10.

.3Hold down clips: purpose made clips to secure tile to suspension system, approved for use in fire-rated systems.

Part 3Execution

Spec NOTE: Specify installation of mouldings and other accessories as required.

3.1EXAMINATION

.1Do not install acoustical panels and tiles until work above ceiling has been inspected by the Architect.

3.2INSTALLATION

.1Install acoustical panels and tiles in ceiling suspension system.

.2Install fibrous acoustical media over area indicated on drawings.

.3In fire rated ceiling systems, secure lay-in panels with hold-down clips and protect over light fixtures, diffusers, air return grilles and other appurtenances according to Certification Organizations design requirements.

3.3APPLICATION

.1Install acoustical units in pattern as indicated on the drawings or, if no drawing available, parallel to building lines with edge unit not less than 50% of unit width and with directional pattern running in same direction.

.2Scribe acoustic units to fit adjacent work and butt joints tight.

3.4INTERFACE WITH OTHER WORK

.1Co-ordinate ceiling work to accommodate components of other sections, such as light fixtures, diffusers, speakers, sprinkler heads, to be built into acoustical ceiling components.
