Host Family Letter #2
To: PPP Host Families
From: Terrina and PPP kumu
Date: July 25, 2011
Dear Host Parents,
Week 1 was great fun, culminating with a most successful dinner dance. Thanks to all and welcome to Week 2 of PPP! The students are enjoying a variety of fun-filled activities related to as they more deeply explore the lives of Ancient Hawaiians.
Here are our activities for the week:
· Monday, July 25– Lo ‘i
The students worked today in the Ka Papa Lo ‘i o Kanewai near the UH dorms and led by Hiapo. Please ask them about their experiences tonight. This will be quite a unique opportunity for them so many of them will undoubtedly write about it in their journals! They will learn about the water, the varieties of taro, and they worked right in the lo ‘i and got muddy!
· Tuesday, July 26 – Waikalua Loko Fishpond
Please ensure students wear their grubby clothes again, old tennis shoes and socks, pants (preferably shorts), hat, sunscreen, light rain jacket, extra change of clothes, plastic bag, and insect repellent. There will be many hands-on activities including community service.
· Wednesday, July 27 -- Making kihei and pool swim
The students will start making their kihei (traditional Hawaiian garment worn over one shoulder for the Ho‘olaule‘a). They will be working with paints so it would be better if they not wear light-colored clothing. They will design their own patterns for the kihei. For the swim, students need to bring a swimsuit, towel, slippers and sunscreen.
· Thursday, July 28 – Ala Moana half day. Please remember to complete the Thursday pick-up form. Students have a copy or you may go online to: iws.punahou.edu/department/wocenter/ib/ppp/2011/
Reminder: the students will have lunch money ($5). They MUST stay with buddies. Please remind them. Thank you for making arrangements with your student(s) for pick-up at a mutually convenient time and place. We have suggested for students to explore other venues and have given them information on how to get to Ward Center from Ala Moana should they be interested in the movies, beach, or shopping. If your student(s) is/are to take the bus home, please tell them what time to be home, provide exact bus fare ($1.25 for students), and remind them to call you IF THEY ARE LATE FOR ANY REASON. This form is due by Wednesday, July 27th. Please have your student return it to his/her homeroom teacher.
· Friday, July 29 – Traditional costume day!
There will be a photo shoot for students in their traditional costumes! Please remind the students to bring their traditional costumes, if they have them, to school. They may need hangers for them.
Next Friday, August 5th is our Ho`olaule`a, our celebration and sharing of student learning! A formal invitation to the event will arrive later this week with information on the potluck meal following the ceremony.
Some students may wish to plan activities that will enable them to spend more time with one another. While this is understandable, we have pointed out to the students that plans made by their host families must take priority. Students have also been reminded that they need to obtain approval from their host families before making their own plans for parties or other such gatherings. Please feel free to turn down any request you feel is unreasonable, and we will support you in your decision.
Many thanks and much aloha to you all for making this a successful and rewarding program!
