Who will be the next Trig Star?

February 14—Students from throughout Orange County are invited to attend Southern California’s Trig Star event on Saturday, March 4 at Santiago Canyon College in Orange. This free, fun day of activities has been designed to introduce students of all ages to careers in surveying and mapping sciences. Students can win cash and prizes in a trigonometry competition and Survey Challenge. The event also will include continental breakfast, a barbeque lunch, career speakers, informational exhibits, and an overview of surveying careers and equipment. Parents are welcome to attend with their children.

“We want young people to know about the rewarding, high paying careers available in surveying and mapping sciences,” said Jeremy Evans, Santiago Canyon College’s Survey/Mapping Sciences program facilitator, who is also the vice president and technical director of surveying for Psomas in Costa Mesa. “This is a rapidly growing industry in which you don’t need a college degree to get a job.”

Land development throughout California combined with the retirement of many of today’s surveyors will create a huge demand for entry-level employees in the near future. Surveyors and mapping technicians work in many industries, including engineering, architecture, construction, real estate, transportation, utility companies, governments and much more. They can choose from self-employment or work in public and private industries all over the world. Surveyors and survey/mapping technicians can work indoors and out, from high-rise buildings and housing subdivisions to city streets.

Trig Star is sponsored by the Orange County Chapter of California Land Surveyors Association and is part of a nation-wide competition of the National Society of Professional Surveyors. The event is facilitated by Vital Link of Orange County.
