What is the Phoenix Union Plan for the Walkout?

All Phoenix Union schools will be closed, beginning April 26, and April 27. Should the walkout last longer, we will inform you. District offices will also be closed to the public. Alhambra, Central and Cesar Chavez High Schools will serve breakfast and lunch for PUHSD students only during walkout days.

How will I know about School Closures?

Our highest priority is timely communication. We will use our emergency notification system to communicate accurate information related to work stoppage and/or school closings.

How long might a strike or work stoppage last?

We do not know at this time, however, our initial planning is for the first two days, April 26 and 27. Our sources tell us it could extend to Monday, April 30. Timely communication is a priority and we will share accurate information as quickly as it becomes available.

If a school is closed, would the school year be extended?

Yes, According to state laws and current policies, any day that a school is closed would have to be made up. This could be done by adding days on Saturday, or at the end of the school year. Potential days would be Saturday, May 12, Saturday, May 19 and Friday, May 25.

Would cancelled classes or school closures affect graduation dates?

No. Graduation dates and times will remain a scheduled.

If schools are closed, will it affect students on free or reduced meals?

Meals will be available for all Phoenix Union students at Alhambra, Central and Cesar Chavez High Schools for each walkout day. Breakfast will be 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and lunch from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Will the District continue to provide Exceptional Student Services?

Only for students who attend private placement facilities. Transportation will be provided for students in private day special placement such as The ACES and other out-of-district special needs travel.

Are there other resources for parents and students during a walkout?

There is a list of community resources available on the District website at Some locations may require advanced registration.

If schools are closed, would team sports practices or games take place as scheduled?

The regular season will be over for spring sports, and only the playoffs, tournaments and post-season competition remains. For now, AIA varsity sports will continue for post-season competition.

If schools are closed, would school trips would be cancelled.

Out-of-state and overnight field trips will be handled on a case-by-case basis at the school level. Your student’s principal or teacher will communicate plans regarding a particular trip. Single-day trips during walkout period will be determined on a case by case basis.

If schools are closed, how will students take Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) exams?

Both AP and IB testing will take place at home campuses. Currently, IB exams are scheduled to begin May 2 and AP exams begin May 7. There will also be make-up opportunities later in May.

What about proms, honors, awards or any other extracurricular activities?

Proms will be held as planned. Celebrations, concerts and any other extracurricular or club activities will not be heldduring a school closure.

If schools are closed will the child care centers located on campuses close.

Yes. If there is a work stoppage and schools are closed, the child care centers located on our campuses will be closed.

Will facility rentals continue in the eventof a school closure

Rental events are being handled on a case-by-case basis.

I am a parent and an employee of the District. Will I report to work in the event of a work stoppage?

Employee instructions in the event of school closures will be addressed separately in another communique.
