What is Nutmeg Knockout?

Nutmeg Knockout is a football skills game, where players go head to head to outperform and outscore each other, with the ultimate aim to put the ball between the legs of the opponent and retrieve it on the other side to win the game (aclean Nutmeg).

A Nutmeg move can be played forward, backwards or sideways and match referees will rule on whether or not a Nutmegmove has been performed successfully.

The Nutmeg Knockout Pitch is a restricted playing area with small goals at each end.

What are the rules of a Nutmeg Knockout Tournament Match?

  • Nutmeg KO is a knockout tournament from start to finish
  • Gameswill last for 3 minutes
  • The smallest of the two players involved will kick-off
  • The player in possession of the ball must shoot within 30 seconds
  • Dangerous play and fouling not allowed
  • Free kicks must be taken within 3 seconds or possession will be given over to the other player
  • For free kicks opponent must stand 1 metre away.
  • If the ball touches an opponent (other than a Nutmeg move) possession is given over to the other player
  • If the ball touches the perimeter fencing, or goes out over the perimeter fencing, possession is given over to the other player
  • When a goal is scored, possession is given over to the other player
  • Fair Play and respect between opponents is essential and a player not abiding by this rule can be disqualified
  • A clean Nutmeg Move will win the game immediately, irrespective of time or score in the game
  • The tally of goals scored will only count if a Nutmeg has not been achieved by the end of the game
  • Sudden death (Goal or Nutmeg) extra time of 1 minute will apply for a drawn game in normal time
  • If there is no result after extra time, the winner will be decided on the toss of a coin.

What are the age categories?

Depending on volume of entries, the tournament will involve the following age brackets, with separate male and female competitions applying.

Ages 8 – 11

Ages 12 – 15

Ages 16 – 35

Ages 35 +

What do I have to do to enter?

For now, all you should do is register your interest in participating in the Tournament, by completing and returning the Registration Form to the named location nearest you. The Registration Form will appear in the Westmeath Examiner and can also be downloaded from the Council’s Website at or from the Westmeath Sports Partnership website at at the Westmeath Examinier Website will also be available in hardcopy at the named locations.

Depending on volume of entries, the Destination Sport Mullingar, Nutmeg Knockout Tournament 2012 will take place over a number of days possibly between Thursday 21st June and Sunday 24th June, with the finals taking place on the afternoon of Sunday 24th June on Dominick Street, Mullingar. Participants will be kept informed.
