Training Outline

Running a community kitchen isn’t easy, so you’ll take part in a series of training sessions to help you get started. These sessions will last a total of 12 weeks, after which time, the kitchen spaces will be handed over to you and your fellow volunteers.

Initial training Sessions.

These will take place at the Earl Shilton Community house and will be an opportunity for you to meet your fellow community kitchen volunteers from all three community kitchens and your tutor. You’ll spend your time learning how to train other people in the kitchen. These sessions will give you the background knowledge you’ll need to go on to run your own community kitchens, so you’ll need to attend both of them.

Session 1 / Friday 8th September. 10am till 1pm
Session 2 / Friday 15th September. 10am till 1pm

Waste Less Save More sessions (10 weeks in total)

After completing your initial training, you’ll go on to take part in a 10 week Waste Less Save more course at your chosen community kitchen. You’ll be with your fellow volunteers, but the sessions are also open to members of the local community who want to drop in. To begin with, the sessions will be run entirely by your tutor, but over the course of the 10 weeks, you and your fellow volunteers will be encouraged to take over as you put into practice what you have learned in the initial training. Dates for the sessions vary from venue to venue:

Feed the 500 event

We’re setting the community kitchens a collective challenge. On 17th November the Hinckley Christmas lights will be switched on at the annual Tin Hat Fair. We would like you to come along with your fellow community kitchen volunteers, members of the local community and food waste prevention groups and help feed 500 people with food that would otherwise go to waste. While you feed people, we would like you to share your tips on reducing food waste and invite people to visit your community kitchens to learn more.

Celebration events

After feeding 500 people at the Tin Hat Fair, you deserve a bit of a celebration back at your community kitchen. This is an opportunity for you to showcase what you have learned to your friends, family and local communities as you take on the day to day running of the community kitchens.
