Mission Statement:

To serve older adults and Veterans with socialenrichment programs in a home-like environment, and provide respite and support for their families and caregivers. Our goal is to help seniors remain at home as long as possible, thereby avoiding unnecessary or premature institutionalization and its highcosts.

Executive Director’s Report

It has truly been a remarkable year here at Valley Haven. From growing our business to expanding our fundraising efforts, every detail has been presided over with love and care. We created a new event for the Lompoc community: The Platters Live! Tribute, which is a benefit concert for our program. Our first concert went very well and we are so pleased to be bringing it back on an annual basis. We’ve also partnered with the Lompoc Valley Caregivers Support Network. Through this partnership, we hope to not only grow our membership, but also to help caregivers who need extra support by connecting them with services they may not have known about.

The Valley Haven program has also grown, adding new activities and outings to keep our members engaged and happy. We now have live music four times each month, consisting of bible hymns played on the piano, a variety of music played on guitar, and bluegrass! Another very exciting addition has been miniature horses who come once a month. We’ve recently incorporated lunch outings back into the program such as taco Tuesday. We also schedule a trip to the movies once per month. We’ve added some new games to our activity program, Bingo on the big screen in our activity room, and will be adding a Netflix subscription to enhance our in-house movie screenings. Valley Haven’s dedicated staff continue to do exceedingly well with our members, offering the level of care that each of us would want for our own lovedones.

The past year unfortunately has been a year of loss for Valley Haven, as we had to make the choice to graduate a few members out of our social program and into medical model programs that would better serve them. Tragically, we also lost three members and one of our family caregivers to illness. Loss is never easy, and we carry the memories of all our members in our hearts.

Our Alzheimer’s support group, led by Mary Lou Parks, continues to grow as well. There is a great group of ladies and gentlemen that meet here in the Valley Haven administrative office on the second Wednesday and fourth Monday of every month from 1-2:30pm. These meetings are kept confidential and are a great opportunity for family caregivers to come together in support of one another.

In other news, we are expanding our Veteran’s program to the Santa Ynez Valley. Veterans may be eligible for low to no-cost day program services. This year we have had six veterans enrolled in our program and have seen it be very successful for them and their families. We are hoping to bring in more Veterans in the near future.

Please visit our website at to see our monthly activity calendars and get any further information that you would like on our program. Valley Haven is such a special place and we welcome visits from our donors, supporters and the general public at any time. Thank you for all of your kindness and support!

Member Spotlight

Mary C.

Mary (pictured at top left) has been a member of Valley Haven for a couple years. She currently attends twice weekly. Mary can often be heard describing herself as “the oldest and the shortest”. She is a petite lady with a great sense of humor and personality that shines. Mary enjoys our creative art activities and is an active participant in Bingo. We love seeing her smiling face when she is here and enjoy all the stories about her younger years.

Christine B.

ChristinehasbeenamemberofValleyHavenforoverayear.Sheattendsonceweeklyandis an active participant in everything we do here. She especially enjoys our dogs, Bear and Rosie and can often be seen holding one or the other. Christine and her husband Steve are also generous donors, having sponsored multiple luncheons, which Steve often joins us for (bottomleft).

John Skinner

Every day in small ways, memories of you come our way. Although absent, you are near, missed, loved and always dear.

In Loving memory of our “Grandpa John”, a treasured member of Valley Haven since 2008. We will miss your laughter and great smile.

Message from our Board President

This year has brought many changes for Valley Haven. We have increased census to between 10-14 members per day. We have moved the administrative office from out of the main house to studio. This permitted us to create a quiet room as required by licensure statutes. This has benefited the members greatly in their health, by allowing them to rest peacefully when needed.

Valley Haven is into its second year contract with the Department of Veterans Affairs to pay for respite care for those that have served our country honorably. We average 2-3 veterans attending the program daily. We anticipate to open up respite care to veterans that live in the Santa Ynez Valley. Currently, these veterans are not being served by any local providers.

Valley Haven has benefited from several local and regional foundations who have provided grants and community donations. Many of these grants will pay for capital improvements and board developments. In the past, Valley Haven has been able to secure grants for operational needs. Unfortunately, many of these organizations are transitioning out of this types of grant. The board and executive director as well as staff have been looking for new avenues to raise funds for Valley Haven.

The executive director and staff continue to ensure that Valley Haven is a warm and inviting place to be at. To enhance the program at Valley Haven, the executive director has added new services available to the members. We now offer bathing for members as needed and added new activities such as pet therapy, outings for members, “Taco Tuesday” lunches and music programs. Valley Haven has an Alzheimer’s Support Group that meets twice monthly in the administrative office.

On April 21, 2017 we held a very successful fundraising concert entitled The Platters Live! Tribute. The event was sold out with standing room only. The event was very well received by the public and proved to be so helpful to our fundraising efforts that we are already planning to replicate it in 2018.
