Welcome to the Fourth National Critical Perspectives: Criminology and Social JusticeConference! 2014 sees the conference, which has been alternating annually between Carleton and Ottawa University, returning to Carleton. The conference, a forum for Canadian and international scholars and people in the broader community examining criminological and social justice issues,has been growing in popularity each year. This year, about 80 faculty and graduate students from Canada, Australia, Poland, and the U.S. are presenting papers. There are also a number of presenters from the broader Canadian criminal justice community, allowing for active engagement and exchange between the academic world and the community.

Evening events will include:

  • Tuesday, June 10 - Conference opening party at Avant-Garde co-sponsored by Red Quill Books, the Journal of Prisoners on Prisons, and the Criminalization and Punishment Education Project
  • Wednesday, June 11 - Ummni Khan's book launch party for Vicarious Kinks: SM in the Socio-Legal Imaginary
  • Thursday, June 12 - Arts/music/poetry event at Cafe Nostalgica organized by the Criminalization and Punishment Education Project.
  • The latter event doubles as the opening event of the International Conference on Penal Abolition which will be held at the University of Ottawa, Friday June 13-Sunday June 15 (

Parking:

The parking map link is below. The Canal Building is #42 on the map. The campus parking rate is $3.50 per hour. The least expensive parking lot is P-7 (closest to the Bronson St. campus entrance) which has a daily maximum of $7. P-5 allows all day parking for $10. Most other lots have a daily rate of $13 and/or a 4 hour maximum.

Public Transit:

The number 4, 7 and 111 buses come onto the Carleton campus. Please refer to the OC Transpo websitefor fare information, route maps, and transit schedules to plan your trip to/from campus.

Taxi Service:

The university has a designated taxi stand location at the Unicentre (Lot 2). Designated pick-up points are also located at all major buildings on campus.

Where to stay in Ottawa:

Carleton University Residence has a block of rooms booked for conference participants. A single room in a shared suite (one double-sized bed; shared kitchette, shared washroom) – 1 person occupancy - $70.61 per night; 2 person occupancy - $94.66 per night. Rates include daily breakfast, 3% DMF on rooming portion and 13% HST. At the time of writing, we do not have the rooming block number. Individual guests are responsible for calling and reserving their room. Bookings can be made at or by calling 613-250-5607.

Les Suites Hotel has set aside a block of suites for visiting conference participants. The preferred group rates are $169.00/night for a Premiere One Bedroom Suite, and $239.00/night for a Premiere Two Bedroom Suite. Both suites provide fully equipped kitchens, ensuite laundry facilities, private balconies, and high-speed wireless Internet. Situated in downtown Ottawa, Les Suites Hotel provides turn-key condominium style accommodations close to the University of Ottawa campus, and about a 10-15 minute drive from the Carleton campus.

There are no hotels in walking distance but all the major chains are here of course. There are B&Bswithinwalking distance.
