A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in honor of Dr. Emery A. Wilson upon the occasion of his imminent retirement as Dean of the University of Kentucky College of Medicine on June 30, 2003.

WHEREAS, Emery A. Wilson was born in Frankfort, Franklin County, Kentucky, in 1942, and he was raised in Stanford, Lincoln County, Kentucky; and

WHEREAS, Emery A. Wilson graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine in 1968; he completed his residency there in obstetrics and gynecology in 1972, and subsequently was awarded a fellowship to study reproductive endocrinology at Harvard University in 1974; and

WHEREAS, Emery A. Wilson has distinguished himself both as a professor of obstetrics and gynecology and as a researcher in the field of reproductive endocrinology; and he has published 92 journal articles and 4 books; and

WHEREAS, Emery A. Wilson performed the first successful in vitro fertilization procedure in the Commonwealth of Kentucky; and

WHEREAS, Emery A. Wilson has served the University of Kentucky as Dean of the College of Medicine since 1987, making him the third longest serving dean in the United States; and

WHEREAS, Emery A. Wilson, in his role as dean, provided exemplary leadership as the College of Medicine, in the 1990s, embarked on landmark curriculum change that made it one of only eight medical schools supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and that resulted in the innovative and highly regarded program known nationally as the Kentucky Medical Curriculum; and

WHEREAS, Emery A. Wilson, in his role as dean, has helped the College of Medicine to expand its research program into one of national prominence, as noted by significant increases in external research funding, recognition of several departments by inclusion in Top 20 lists, and a national ranking of 26th among all public medical schools based on funding from the National Institutes of Health; and

WHEREAS, Emery A. Wilson has encouraged quality and innovation in clinical care, both at the University of Kentucky and in the College of Medicine's outreach clinics in rural and under-served areas; and

WHEREAS, Emery A. Wilson is a Diplomat of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and he is a member of the American Medical Association, the Kentucky Medical Association, the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, the Society of Reproductive Endocrinologist, and the Royal Society of Medicine; and

WHEREAS, Emery A. Wilson serves on the Executive Council of the Association of American Medical Colleges, and he is a member of the Council of Deans Administrative Board; he is past chair of the Medical School Section of the American Medical Association; and he now chairs the Liaison Committee for Medical Education that is responsible for the accreditation of all medical schools in the United States and Canada; and

WHEREAS, on June 30, 2003, Emery A. Wilson will step down as Dean of the College of Medicine at the University of Kentucky;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The Senate does hereby commend and applaud Dr. Emery A. Wilson for 15 years of distinguished service and remarkable leadership to the University of Kentucky and to the Commonwealth of Kentucky. We wish him success in all future endeavors.

Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor of Dr. Emery A. Wilson upon the occasion of his imminent retirement on June 30, 2003.
