Paper – XIV – Social Work Intervention for Environmental Protection

Total Teaching Hours: 60

OBJECTIVES

  • To enable the students to understand the need for protectingthe environment.
  • To build awareness on the issues related to environment concerns.
  • To sensitize the students and prepare them to equip with suitable skills to sustain the environment.

Unit -1 (12 Hours)

Concepts &Introduction - Environment andits relevance in the developmental context. Renewable & Non-Renewable Resources.Eco-System and Energy Flow in the Eco-System, Ecological Succession,Food chains, Food web and Ecological pyramids. The Earth Summit. Climate Change, Acid rain, nuclear accidents and holocaust.

Unit - 2 (12 Hours)

Environmental Movements:Chipko Movements,SilentValley,Narmada Bachao Andolan,Sand Mine Quarrying,Palar waterBasin Issue.

Environmental Concerns:Global Warming,Green House effect,C.F.C & Ozone depletion,Global Environmental Issues,Salt Pan Workers,Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) and Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

Unit - 3 (12 Hours)

Pollution - Types of Pollution: Air,Water and Noise, Definition,Causes,Effect and Control.Natural Resources and associated challenges with specific reference to Forest,Water,Land and Energy resources.

Unit - 4 (12 Hours)

Policies and Programmes - Environmental Policies,Issues,Concerns and Challenges,Water Pollution and its Management, Solid Waste Management,Garbage Disposal System.Environmental Protection Act - 1986, Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act - 1981, Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act -1977, Wildlife Protection Act - 1972, Indian Forest Act - 1927, Issues involved in enforcement of environmental legislation.

Environmental Policies and Programmes: Issues,Concerns and Challenges,National Response to Environmental Policy Developed and Developing countries Perspective to Environmental Policy Global attempt to safe guard environment.

Unit - 5 (12 Hours)

Social Work Intervention - Sustainability & Natural Resource Scarcity.Issues inSocial Work Practices with specific case study analysis related to environment.

Role of Social workers in protecting the Environment with Right based approach to safeguard our environment.Environmental Education.
