Kurzweil 3000 Implementation Idea

Title: Vertically Tiling Text, Reading and Answering Questions Activity

Subject Area:Earth Science

Grade Level:Grades 11 and 12

Rationale: The purpose of this lesson is to provide students with a brief introduction to rocks and familiarize them with the three basic types of rocks and how they are formed.

Objectives:

  • It is expected that students will be able to name the three basic types of rocks (igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary).
  • It is expected that students will understand what rocks are made of.
  • It is expected that students will understand that igneous rocks are divided into two groups, intrusiveor extrusive, depending upon where the molten rock solidifies.

Materials:

  • Computer with Kurzweil software
  • Text from the US Geological Survey -
  • Questions created from content of

Description of Activity

Students will read the assigned reading, ‘Rocks’ by the U.S. Geological Survey and answer questions related to the reading. They will Tile Vertically the text and the questions. After reading the questions on the worksheet, students will then actively listen to the text onRocks. When they have finished reading the text they will answer the questions by copying and pasting or dragging and dropping answers to complete the worksheet. Once they have completedthe worksheet, the student will use Text Notes to add their name and date. When this process is complete the student will save, print and hand in the completed worksheet.

Kurzweil 3000 Features Used:

  • KESI Virtual Printer
  • TileVertically
  • Zoom In/Zoom Out
  • Active Listening/Reading
  • Drag and Drop
  • Copy and Paste
  • Text Notes

Before the Activity

1. Teacher imports the webpage into Kurzweil using the KESI Virtual Printer. The webpage used in this tutorial was obtained online from the US Geological Survey- Once the document is imported into Kurzweil save the document as a .kes file

2. Teacher creates questions related to the text, prints the text to the KESI Virtual Printer and saves the document as a .kes file

TEACHER Activity: Reading, Writing, Studying: Vertically Tiling Text, Reading and Answering Questions Activity
1 / The KESI Virtual Printer is a utility that is built into Kurzweil 3000. It doesn’t actually print anything to paper but will convert Word .doc, PDFs, HTM, HTML etc. and opens them in Kurzweil 3000. When the document is converted to a .kes file the student will have access to all the Reading and Writing features of Kurzweil.
Click on the US Geological Survey link about rocks /
2 / You need to convert the file from the .html to a .kes file. Open File Print . Select the KESI Virtual Printer from the drop down menu and click OK.
In this example the file is converted from an .html to a .kes file. The file is now printed into Kurzweil. If it is a big file Kuzweil goes through a few processes. You can view these in the bottom left hand corner.
Name and save the file. /
3 / Repeat this same process to convert the questions from a .doc to a .kes file.
Name and save the file.
STUDENT Activity 1: Reading, Writing, Studying: Vertically Tiling Text, Reading and Answering Questions Activity
1 / This activity has two parts. They are as follows:
Part 1: Vertically Tiling Text and Worksheet
Getting Started:
You will be working with two documents Rocks Text and Rocks Worksheet. /

2 / Open the ‘Rock Text’ document. From the Main Menu Window TileVertically.
The document opensin full screen. You will need to shrink this to half the screen. This can be done by hovering the cursor over the right hand side by the slider. A double arrow will appear. Once you see the double arrow
hold down the left mouse button and drag the document so that it fills half of the screen. /

2 / Next Open the ‘Rock Worksheet’. From the Main Menu click on Window TileVertically. This will automatically open as half screen. The reading text and the worksheetcan now be viewed in the document window.
Note: You will probably need to scale down the size of the Zoom on both the text to be read and the worksheet. Click anywhere on either document that is open and click on the Zoom tool on the Reading Toolbar and resize the text accordingly. Text size will vary from student to student. /
STUDENT Activity 2: Reading, Writing, Studying: Vertically Tiling Text, Reading and Answering Questions Activity
1 / Answering Questions
You can answer questions in several ways. For the purposes of this lesson we will answer questions by Dragging and Dropping or Copying and Pasting.
Drag and Drop:
Find the words igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic in the text. Highlight the word igneous. This can be done by double clicking on the word or by holding down the left mouse button and dragging the cursor over the word. Once the word is highlighted drag the answer to question number 1 on the worksheet. Do the same for sedimentary and metamorphic.
Copy and Paste:
Find the words igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic in the text. Highlight the word igneous. This can be done by double clicking on the word. Once the word is highlighted right click. The right menu opens. Select Copy.
Using this process you cannot right click and select paste or Ctrl + V (paste) until you have created a Text Box. Click on the Text Note and position it on the line where you would like the answer to appear. A blue rectangle appears and the cursor is now on the inside of the Text Note. You can right click inside the box and select Paste or you press Ctrl + V (Paste) to paste your answer.
Continue answering the questions until the worksheet is complete. /

2 / Once the worksheet is complete click on the Text Note to add your name. Bring the mouse cursor down to the “Name” line and using the left mouse button click to add the Text Note. A blue rectangle appears and the cursor is now on the inside of the Text Note. Type your name in the Text Note
Repeat this process to add the date. /
3 / Check your work. /
4 / Save the document. /
5 / Print and Hand in. /

Extension Activities: Vertical Tiling can also be used for testing purposes or to compare an original document and an edited one or to view an outline and the first draft.
