July 14 Pen, Paper, Power: Autobiography as a Pathway to Discovery
Everyone has a story to tell. In writing our story we look back over past events and reassemble these scattered memories of our life into a story that becomes the story of our life. As we reflect on the meaning of certain events and experiences, we begin to view these scenes differently; we discern the pattern that connects them. The consequence to both author and reader may include heightened understanding of the writer's life and of the many factors -personal, familial and cultural--that shaped it. Autobiographies provide an excellent means of learning about the unique as well as the shared aspects of human development over the life span by highlighting the author's developmental tasks, turning points, stresses and individual coping strategies. This workshop is designed for those who wish to explore autobiography as a way of gaining self-understanding, a method of inquiry into the lives of others, or as a means to leave some of our story behind. We will consider some distinguishing features of autobiography, review examples of autobiographies of well-known and lesser-known writers, and engage in the guided preparation of our own autobiography.

July 21 The Magic of Storytelling: Connecting with Your Audience
Everyone has a story. Everyone is a story. We may store our memories through narrative formats and we may transform experience through sharing and creating new stories. The art of storytelling is one of the most ancient of arts, but before the recent renewed interest in storytelling, Western culture usually viewed stories as what we read to children to put them to sleep. Explore the enchanting world of storytelling in this hands- on experience of storytelling techniques and approaches. Care will be taken to meet the individual needs and interests of participants. The focus will be on exploring different aspects of storytelling: from the experience of the teller and the audience. We will be using some traditional stories, as well as experimenting with personal stories. No experience necessary!
