11:00 a.m.

Taggart Conference Room

Present: Sherry Agin, Bill Ballard, Jennifer Briggs, Dan DiBiasio, Ann Hamilton, Brenda Hamlin, Tonya Paul, Cheryl Simon, Cathy Vermillion, and Mike Zembower

President DiBiasio welcomed the Committee at 11:00 a.m.

Questions:

·  When is the next review of Class 5 positions?

o  It was done in 2010 with a plan to do it every five years. It is planned for 2015.

·  What will this year’s compensation be based on – merit or parity? What is the criteria for merit?

o  It will be based on merit but parity information was distributed to make those making merit decisions aware.

·  Will merit be based on the last evaluation?

o  Yes and other factors. The administration will review all recommendations to make sure there is fair treatment.

·  Does the compensation pool include faculty and staff or are they separate.

o  Separate.

·  If the Tobacco Free Policy is approved, will smoking be allowed on the road, near homes, off the Green Monster?

o  Smokers could stand on the street off ONU property at their own peril. Discussion was held about a smoking pavilion but the committee states there is evidence of harm from tobacco products so the goal is to help tobacco users kick the habit. Please review the Policy for discussion at the next Class 5 meeting.

Other:

President DiBiasio stated that after the Budget Advisory Committee completed their task, they began identifying other policies on campus that have a negative impact on the budget. After the Committee meets with Deans and Vice Presidents, they will present the findings to the Class 5 Committee for review. One policy they are looking at is the severance policy. The original goal of this policy was to encourage early retirement and that is not happening. The Budget Advisory Committee continues to work on the revenue and expense side of the budget. The University has cut costs but can always do more. Increasing enrollment is a priority. Admissions is talking to more international students.

It was brought up that the technology in Weber Hall has many glitches. Employees do not always get a good response from IT. It was also suggested that IT be more proactive in letting staff know if they are going to upgrade or know of a problem.
