Hello one and all! I’m Sam from SeenThroughGlass I’ve teamed up with Shell VPower Nitro + to learn more about six different motor communities around the world. Today I’m in the USA at the 30th annual Good Guys West Coast Nationals to discover more about Hot Rods, Muscle Cars, Custom Rides and all things Americana.

Marc

Well Good Guys is a Hot Rod community it’s an association my father started. Every level of car person is here today. I grew up going to these things with my mom and dad before Good Guys, so they’re all family. The cars are what brings us together and the people is what it’s all about.

When I got to be 14 or 15 I decided I really would like things mechanical. I bought my first Model A Ford it was a deluxe roadster. I mean those cars today are thousands of dollars-

Sam

I was going to say, expensive as well

Bill

I paid $10.

Sam

It was always Hot Rods then?

Bill

Only by necessity because you buy an old clunker and then you fix it up and make it go faster and you drop the front end and you put big tyres on the back and you make it a little different to all the rest of the clunkers on the street. In the day growing up, you know, we popped them up and made them go faster and you know, these guys in Detroit that make cars, they don’t know what they’re doing I mean you ask a 14-year-old kid he’s the expert.

Sam

You built this car didn’t you?

Bill

I built this car yeah, I started with some grills that I bought at a steel shop the body we got off of eBay.

Lee

Yes the car is really good I take it pretty much anywhere.

Sam

Are you a little bit obsessive about the cleanliness?

Lee

I can be, I can be, I try not to.

Sam

I got that sense, yeah.

Lee

When I first bought it the paint it was so old it looked grey in colour. In polishing it as long as I did for like four hours a day for weeks, I ended up going to the doctor and I couldn’t use my right arm for a while.

Sam

Oh wow, so a self-inflicted car polishing injury.

Lee

Self-inflicted yeah.

Sam

I think that deserves another handshake.

Lee

Ok.

Sam

And I see you’re in your Thunderbolts shirt, you’re a member of the club?

Lee

Yes, I’m a member of the Thunderbolts.

Sam

What is the Thunderbolts what do you guys do?

Lee

The Thunderbolts is the oldest continually meeting club in the United States. They’ve been meeting every month, twice every month since 1945.

Sam

We’ve seen some amazing cars today some which are built in sheds and then some as meticulous and amazing as the ones you’ve got here. Do you find that you’ve built strong relationships, friendships after spending time creating their babies almost?

Steve

Typically people we build cars for, they become very close friends. We vacation together and one of my Hot Rod friends, I’m his son’s godfather-

Sam

Ok.

Steve

You start off building Hot Rods and next thing you know your family’s here. And that speaks for most of the people here.

Scene transition – Bill interview

Sam and Bill sat in Bill’s car, Hot Rods driving through event.

Sam

Is there a worry or concern that people are going to move on and there won’t be people to join these clubs?

Bill

No there will always a car hobby, just the type of car, ’33 Ford Roadsters, I think that’s going to go away. Kids coming up today, you can afford a Honda Civic, a used one maybe, so that’s today’s Hot Rod.
