RL.9.10.3 Analyze how complex characters (e.g., those with multiple or conflicting motivations) develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme / Students will describe 3 character traits about the main characters of the story and describe the importance of their role in the plot. / Students will need to know the definition of character and plot. They will also need to know what character traits are and how to put them into words. / Teacher will generate a written assessment and question the students verbally too. / The students will be taught the lesson after they have the vocabulary knowledge. / After students have demonstrated mastery of the standard, they will move on to analyzing how the plot would be different if the character had different traits.

Determine a theme or central idea of text and analyze. / What is the main idea? Give 3 supporting details. / Students will need to demonstrate and understanding of “theme”, “central idea” and “analyze” before they can perform the standard task. / Teacher will create a written assignment in the form of a graphic organizer, outline, or other means of assessment that are appropriate for student. / After students have demonstrated an understanding of vocabulary knowledge required for this lesson. / When student have learned the essential standard we will increase the rigor by introducing more complex themes and introducing RL.9.3 which asks the students to analyze individual characters.
W.9-10.5 Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach, focusing on addressing what is most significant for a specific purpose and audience. (Editing for conventions should demonstrate command of Language standards 1 3 up to and including grades 9 10 on page 32.) /
  • Proficient students will use each of the steps in the writing process while considering a purpose and audience.
They will have anchor papers to refer back to help them know what is expected along with the writing rubric. /
  • They need to know how to write a word and a sentence.
  • They need to know a sentence has a subject and predicate.
  • Students should know to capitalize proper nouns and the beginning of the sentence.
Students need to know the writing process. / A rubric will be given with a writing assessment. The assessment will ask them to complete the writing assignment using each part of the writing process. If the class or student is lower they will be writing a paragraph and if they are academically higher they can write a 3-5 / We will start teaching it this week, but it will be an ongoing process that will continue throughout the year. / When student have learned the essential standard we will increase the rigor by expecting complex and simple sentences, more paragraphs, research reports, compare and contrast essays or usage of further correct grammar.
