CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR MESSAGE OF THEINTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT

Now that the year is drawing to its end, I feel the need to communicate with all IPA members and convey to them and their families my very best wishes and that of the other members of the Permanent Executive Bureau for the New Year 2011.

The year under review has again been characterized by violence and hardship. In many countries local wars are continuing and international terrorism is on the increase with victims among innocent people. Unfortunately a world where people can live together in peace and harmony still seems far away.

Besides the violence and international terrorism, serious calamities, earthquakes, floods and hurricanes struck different parts of the world resulting in thousands of deaths, injuries and total destruction of property. The IPA family is always on the alert to assist IPA members who suffered from these calamities.

As I write this message for happiness for the coming Christmas and New Year’s celebrations my thoughts go to all people suffering and I pray to God to give them strength to overcome the difficulties and resume normal life again.

In 2010 I noticed a continuation of the expansion of our International Police Association with the inclusion of our friends from the Republic of Moldavia. As we rejoice with those that have just joined us we must take equal care not to lose others. In some Sections IPA’s work has been impeded by internal or external circumstances or laid low through inactivity. In these cases, in addition to the work done by the PEB, the Sections should make special efforts to sustain those Sections, which they have previously proposed or supported. Surely it is easier to stand by an existing Section which is in difficulty than to create and develop a completely new one.

Besides the problems some Sections are facing, it is almost unbelievable, that in a time when other idealistic organizations struggle for their existence, the IPA has been able to reach a membership of over 380,000 in 62 Sections. In my opinion, this indicates the strength of the ideals the IPA stands for. This development should encourage us to carry on the work aiming at spreading among more colleagues in many other countries in all continents.

The Founder of our Association had a vision of worldwide friendship and solidarity among police officers and their families. In a world full of conflicts there is obviously a need for international organisations where people can meet in friendship and with mutual respect. There is definitely a need for organizations such us the IPA. I am certain our Association will continue to flourish.

The highlight of the year was the 36th IEC Conference that was successfully organized in Paris. I congratulate once more the Chairperson and the members of the Organising Committee for the excellent work they did. At the Conference, many problems were solved and decisions were taken in friendship and solidarity.

Another focal point was the celebration organized by the IPA Section of the United Kingdom, on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of the Founding of IPA. The keynote feature was a service of the rededication of the IPA stained glass window at the Cathedral Church of the Holy Spirit Guildford, Surrey, which was attended by many prominent people, the members of the PEB and many IPA members from many National Sections.

Concluding, I wish the IPA members in all five continents and their families’ health, happiness, prosperity and contentment for the years to come. May the year 2011 be a year of peace, harmony and friendship for all of us. For those who celebrate Christmas, I wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas.
