IPP/CURRICULAR PRACTICAL TRAINING AUTHORIZATION
Upon receiving an offer letter for an IPP Cooperative Education or Internship assignment, complete the following steps in order for the International Student Services Office to process your IPP/Curricular Practical Training authorization request. International students may NOT work as Independent Contractors.
Offer letter on the company's letterhead should contain following info:
.Position is a Co-op or Intern assignment
.Physical (street) address of the work location
.Detailed position description (The position must be related to the current degree and major of the student.)
.Name, telephone number and e-mail address of the student's supervisor or department manager
.Number of hours per week the student will be working
.Wages per hour
.Starting Date and Ending Date
- Bring your offer letterto the Industrial Practice Programs Office in ECSS2.502. If the offer letter meets UT-Dallas andthe U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ (USCIS) requirements for a CPT assignment, the Industrial Practice Programs (IPP) staff will verify that:
You are enrolled in the Jonsson School Industrial Practice Programs.
You have met the Jonsson School’s IPP eligibility requirements.
2.If all eligibility requirements have been met, you will be given the Jonsson School’s CPT Assignment Acceptance Form , Request for CPT Authorization formand Registration, Add, Drop Formto complete.
3.Program staff will register you for the appropriate ECSC Coursebefore forwarding the IPP/CPT Approval/I-20 Request to the International Student Services Office. The International Student Advisors cannot process your I-20 if you have not registered for the assigned course.
4.ISSO advisors will process your I-20 CPT approval upon receiving the online CPT Approval/I-20 Request.
ISSO maintains daily request cutoff time at 4:00pm. It usually takes one business day for I-20 update to complete.
5.Pick up your I-20 at the International Student Services Office after you receive email notification from ISSO. You may not begin work until you have received your I-20, authorizing you to work for a specific company for a specified period of time. Part-time work authorization means you may work no more that 20 hours per week. You must be careful not to continue employment beyond the date authorized on your I-20.
Student may not continue with CPT assignment if cumulative GPA falls into academic probation. Contact IPP as soon as possible for assistance.
6.Complete the ECSC course requirements by your instructor’s due date to avoid failing the course. If you withdraw from or do not pass your CPT course, you are not authorized to work and you may be in violation of your F-1 status, and you will not be processed for subsequent semesters of IPP/CPT assignments.
7.These steps must be repeated each and every semester before you commence the next semester’s CPT assignment as the U.S.Citizenship and Immigration Services requires that CPT work authorization be issued one semester at a time.
PLEASE NOTE:Once you accept an employer’s offer, you have made a commitment to that employer, and the Industrial Practice Programs staff will not change your paperwork so that you may work for another company.
