Example Opening

“The Three-in-One Punch”

Sometimes we want to write a paper that explains why something needs to be changed or focus on a fact that needs to be proven. What better way to lead in to the thesis of one of those papers than with examples that clarify the point? By starting a paper with examples that are specific and grab the readers’ attention, the examples themselves drive home the intent of the thesis.

To write one of these openings, the writer writes three very similar sentences that illustrate a point, then writes the one fact that ties the three points together, and then presents the thesis.

In order to simplify the concept, it can be summarized with the phrase “the three-in-one punch.” The writer gives three examples, states in one sentence the common element that unifies the sentences, and then states the thesis.

Examples of “Examples Openings” 

Julia Roberts starred in the self-titled film Erin Brockovich in 2000. Halle Berry starred in Monsters’ Ball in 2001 as Leticia Musgrove. CharlizeTherone starred in North Country in 2000 as JoseyAimes. All three female actresses won the prestigious Academy Award for Best Female Actress in the year their movies launched. The only way for a female actress to be acknowledged in Hollywood is through serious, scandalous roles.

In Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler convinced his country to hate Jews all over the world, leading to the slaughter of at least thirteen million innocent Jews. When Joseph Stalin took power over Russia, he had a confirmed twenty million people butchered; unconfirmed tallies put the death toll up to a sickening eighty million. In Turkey during World War I, the government decided that the two million Armenians living in the country did not deserve to live any longer. These twisted men and blinded governments found themselves in this empowered and unstoppable state because of a common thread: all had recently passed laws which required citizens to give up their firearms. Gun control, as it is referred to, only ever has and only ever will lead to an abuse of government power, and in the end, it will cost the world millions of innocent lives.

A young woman is denied health insurance because of he marks on her arms. A man is labeled a freak and is suddenly laid off at work when there were no others laid off. A bleeding teenage girl waits hours in an emergency room lobby watching as people with a cough or headache are ushered into a room before her. Self-injury is a very real disease of the mind and body that is misunderstood around the world; those who participate in the mutilation of their own bodies are outcasts among society. The general public, health associations, and emergency response teams ought to be more compassionate toward individuals who self-injure.
