The service to be rendered is the supply, delivery and test run of the following item:

The 350 kW truck tractors will be used to tow low bed semi-trailers for the conveyance of abnormal loads. / TAKE NOTE
It is a specific requirement that the permissible payload of the 350 kW truck tractor and trailer combination be not less than 50 000 kg. / *Comply / Not Comply

5. / ENGINE
A turbo charged engine with a net power output of not less then 350 kW is required. The minimum required torque at 1 100 rpm is 2 200Nm. (See paragraph 3 of the “General Specifications – G1”) / *Comply / Not Comply

The maximum engine coolant temperature under normal conditions shall not exceed 88˚C and under extreme duty at 1 500 m ASL and 45˚C ambient temperature, the coolant temperature shall not exceed 94˚C. / *Comply / Not Comply

6. / TRANSMISSION
A heavy duty automatic gearbox with at least 14 forward gears and 1 reverse gear is required. The transmission must have the facility to change the gears manually. / *Comply / Not Comply

This General Specification shall be read in conjunction with and shall form part of the foregoing Specification.

The equipment to be supplied shall comply with all specifications contained herein unless otherwise stated in the Specification.

Where this General Specification has limited application, those clauses which have relevance are listed in the Specification.

Where the requirements of this General Specification conflicts with those of the Specification the requirements of the Specification shall take precedence.

1. / ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATIONS
All vehicles and equipment shall in all respects comply with the Road Traffic Act No. 29 of 1989 and Regulations and the SABS Compulsory Vehicle Standards unless otherwise stated. / TAKE NOTE
2. / DUTY
The trucks shall be capable of satisfactory operation under the arduous conditions encountered in the service of the Department, at all altitudes up to 1 500 m above mean sea level and in ambient temperatures varying 0˚ and 40˚C. / TAKE NOTE
3. / ENGINE
(a)The engine shall be of the diesel type, water or air-cooled. / *Comply / Not Comply
(b)The net power output is the maximum kW at maximum allowable operating speed of the engine. / TAKE NOTE
(c)The net power output referred to in the specification shall be measured in accordance with the requirements of SABS 013-1977 and subsequent amendments at 1 400 m A.S.L.

(d)Engines shall be fitted with governors to limit their speed to the maximum allowable engine speed. / TAKE NOTE
(e)The engine shall be fitted with an approved diesel fuel draining water trap. The water trap shall be fitted in such a position in the fuel line that it is gravity fed from the fuel tank. Water traps which do not require to be gravity fed will be considered providing full details of operation are supplied. The water trap shall be adequately protected by an easily removable wire cage or by the structure of the machine.

(g)An approved audible warning device which operates in the event of low lubrication oil pressure as well as excessive engine temperature shall be fitted. Types that shut down the engine completely are not acceptable on self-propelled machines unless a warning is given to the operator prior to engine shutdown.
