  1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

a)Description of the project

According to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its Optional Protocol adopted on 13 December 2006 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, and opened for signature on 30 March 2007, the United Nations asserted that disabled people are 89% more likely to have difficulties in accessing quality health services, being socially excluded and neglected in many forms of economic opportunities.

Refugees and asylum seekers with disabilities are even one of the most socially excluded and neglected human group. They daily face terrible challenges to survive and integrate themselves by lack of resources.

We have organized ourselves (people with disabilities) to come up with this business plan in poultry project as we have skills in the domain and a strong belief that this will help us to become productive, to survive and be able to integrate ourselves in the communities.

The project is about opening a Poultry farming project in Lenasia South-East, where we will be producing and selling eggs to the Mall, Spazza shops, and the communities around.

We have identified the need of this project after realizing:

  • An increase in the number of the people with disabilities begging on the streets of Johannesburg and surrounding areas, most of them being refugees and asylum seekers;
  • The need of sharing skills among ourselves disabled people in a bid to regain our self-esteem, independence and a successful socio-economic integration.

The implementation of this project will assist us in:

  • Generating income to sustain our lives by selling eggs to Mall, Spazza Shops and the surrounding communities.
  • Expanding the project in order for it to be self-financing in the future.
  • Promoting our social and economic integration in the communities.

b)Objectives

-To get a source of survival for us and our families.

-To get employment, to serve the community and guarantee our own integration in the South African social and economic life.

-To create employment to others refugees, asylum seekers, women and others disadvantaged members of the South African communities, especially those living with disabilities willing to learn and join us.

c)Project applicant’s description

The Disabled Refugees Projects (DRP) was created on April 28, 2009 in Johannesburg (South Africa) to be an all-inclusive organization that protects and improve the quality of life of refugees, asylum seekers and South-Africans citizens living with disabilities, empowering them with knowledge on their rights, orienting them with skills that allow them to become self-sufficient and facilitate their integration into mainstream society.

The organization was registered in terms of Non-profit Organization Act, section 21 of 1997 on the 5th of October 2009.

  1. MISSION STATEMENT

Our organization is concerned with the high rate of unemployment in the disabled people’s community and the exclusion of foreign nationals with disabilities in the socio-economic environment. Through our Poultry productions we hope to facilitate our own inclusion in the South African socio-economic life.

  1. IMPLEMENTATION PLAN

The group of disabled people living in the shelter (House for disabled people) has necessary skills and physical abilities to run the project and we are planning to use the spacious yard of the House of disabled people to implement this project.

The Management team of the Disabled Refugees Projects owning the space is keen to provide technical advice on the project implementation.

  • Skills and competencies of the applicants

The project demands skills in poultry farming with particular reference to rearing of chickens for egg production. An understanding of poultry disease control and prevention is also important. Disabled members of the project currently have experience and expertise in this.

  1. SUSTAINABILITY PLAN

People with disabilities will have a total control of the project. They will become self-sustainable through selling eggs and will be able to share expertise and skills with others disabled and members of the surrounding communities interested in the Poultry farming project.

  1. MONITORING AND EVALUATION

The monitoring and evaluation of this project will be implemented under the Disabled Refugees Projects. Disabled members of this project are very well organized and able to submit monthly report to the Management of the Disabled Refugees Projects which then compile a detailed report for the funders.

The organization has a very committed Managerial team which is composed by a Director, a Project Manager, a Finance Administrator and a Secretary. The project also has board members who meet quarterly to discuss issues affecting the project and also to give technical support as well as advices.

  1. KEY SUCCESS FACTORS

As a group, we are away that the key success factors in the Poultry Industry encompass the following:

  • Focusing on a niche markets rather than targeting the mass market
  • Responsiveness to disease outbreaks: one disease outbreak can eliminate all the birds used in egg production. It is therefore important to watch out for all disease outbreaks and exercise the necessary prevention and control measures
  • Convenience: this in terms of being in close proximity to the customers. Customers usually purchase from suppliers in close proximity to their business in order to cut down on transportation costs
  • Reliability: this key success factor pertains to delivering the right quality and quantity of eggs to customers at all order or purchase occasions
  • Affordability: as the industry features many players, customers usually opt for the lowest price. Additionally, considering the fact that eggs are generic products, it is important that the price is always right
  • Quality and quantity: the nature of the business is such that it is a high volume, low profit margin model. About 60% of the costs are attributed to the feed requirements of the layers. It therefore important to sell in large quantities in order to make a practical return. Quality in terms of taste and health benefits is another key success factor as most consumers are very particular about these.

All these important factors will be taken in consideration as we are decided to do quality work and produce quality service in the area.
