Other types of sound files have been added to the old table of sound files. See below for details::
WAV / Wav format used in Windows operating system for recording and playback of all recorded sound – voice, music, etc. Wav files are very large, taking a long time for the end user to download.MIDI / Not a recorded audio format at all. The file contains instructions, which can be read by a computer’s sound card to produce particular notes to be played by musical instruments. Because they do not contain digital audio information, MIDI files are tiny in comparison to standard audio files.
AU / A common compressed format used mainly for UNIX.
AIFF / Audio Interchange File Format. A common audio format used for Mac OS. Because the format does not support any kind of compression, it tends to produce very large files.
Real Audio (RA) / RA developed by an independent company, Progressive Networks. One of the first formats designed for Internet use and has gained widespread use. Files are played using a free ‘plug-in’ available. Uses a compression scheme that makes the file size very small. Supports streaming audio.
MP3 / MPEG-1 Layer III Extremely popular format. Uses a compression ratio capable of bringing file sizes down to approximately a megabyte a minute. MP3 uses a compression system that removes information that is largely beyond the human hearing range. These techniques contribute to the near-CD audio quality.
AAC / AAC generally achieves better sound quality than MP3 at the same bitrate and is the format used by Apple’s iPods, iPhones and iTunes.
SWA / Shockwave Audio. Produces high quality and small file sizes based, like MP3 on MPEG Audio compression.
WMA / Windows Media Audio. (Microsoft)Windows Media Technologies offers a suite of utilities for creating, serving up and viewing streamed multimedia, including high quality audio.
