Team Future IDP Clinic Round-up

Monday, 6 December 2010
Last week GA held the International Development Program (IDP) Clinic in Canberra following the National Club Championships. An enthusiastic bunch of 92 young gymnasts attended representing 17 different High Performance programs from around the country. Additional to the gymnasts were 30 coaches both observing the clinic and coaching their own gymnasts.
The clinic was lead by National Junior Development Coordinator Jo Richards along with National coach Peggy Liddick – fresh from the success at the World Championships and Commonwealth Games. Experienced coaches, Lui Ming, Valerie Kaladzinski and National Choreographer Stacey Umeh also lead the technical direction on each apparatus.
Excitingly – Lauren Mitchell was present to inspire the young gymnasts. The girls had the wonderful opportunity to have a photo taken with Lauren and train along side her. Lauren gave an inspirational speech to the group detailing her path to the top; giving special insight into the true life of a champion gymnast.
The girls were fortunate enough to view her Australian team leotards and hold her Commonwealth and World Championship gold medals. For many of the young gymnasts it will be something they will never forget.
All of the participating gymnasts actively compete in the IDP and were selected from their performances and ranking on the National IDEAL Skills test. The focus of the clinic was refining the girls basic techniques whilst also extending them in appropriate areas of advanced skill development.
Again the clinic was divided into two groups: Clinic 1 was more experienced gymnasts and Clinic 2 was for the younger age group; with 22 gymnasts attending the IDP clinic for the first time. Both clinics trained 5 full training sessions over the 3 days – so it was a busy schedule for their coaches!
Also held during the three days was an intensive coach’s workshop. Focus of the workshop was Peggy Liddick sharing her research on International Trends for each apparatus – very motivating and inspiring for the coaches to hear.
During the clinic all girls participated in the Physical testing; and there were some outstanding performances. Eden Tarvit and Emma Curry were equal champions for the test for the whole clinic.
The following girls were the best physically prepared gymnasts for each age group:
· 13 years: Sophie Ward (WAIS), Tiahn Pestery (AIS), Celest Loo (CH) and Grace Flood (VWHPC)
· 12 years: Emma Curry (MLC), Grace Sheppard (QAS), Karla Danelutti (Balance)

• The clinic wrapped up girls with a demonstration by the girls with some outstanding skills – congratulations girls! Then all girls performing their dance that they had been working on with National Team Choreographer – Stacey Umeh – with the young Clinic 2 girls outshining those from Clinic 1. I am sure all of the girls can’t wait for the ‘rematch’ come July at the next IDP clinic.
On line next week will be the skills and dance that the girls performed at the conclusion of the clinic!
