PROJECT TITLE:BUILD YOUR OWN NATION

GROUPS OF NO MORE THAN 4 PEOPLE.

YOUR GOAL: The time is somewhere in the 18thOR EARLY 19THCentury. Your group is in charge of a committee (THE FOUNDING FATHERS) of a colony in the Americas that has obtained its independence from its European “mother country”. Using your IMAGINATION, and RESEARCH from differing sources, and timely world events, your group will CREATE YOUR OWN NATION under the following guidelines:

Social

  • DICTIONARY DEFINITION OF ‘NATION”.
  • “A large body of people united by common descent, history, culture, or

language, or interests, inhabiting a particular region or territory “

  • I am giving you a blank map of the Americas. Where is your NATION? Why there?
  • What European power was your “mother country”?
  • What is the OFFICIAL NAME of your NATION?
  • Create a COLORED LARGE POLITICAL MAP of your NATION, with all pertinent information
  • Name your national capital city. Why is it named that way?
  • WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN VALUES?
  • What are the value systems of your nation? List the values that represent your nation. Ex, Loyalty, religion, family, conquest, money, education, etc.
  • Based on your values, design your NATIONAL FLAG; be prepared to explain the symbology and colors of your flag. Use the flags in our room as models.
  • Tell me your story. How did your country start, develop, and eventually achieve its independence? What 3 ethnic groups inhabit your NATION? How are they treated?
  • Create a story surrounding the founding of your nation, USING 18TH CENTURY WORLD EVENTS AND EUROPEAN POWERS AS YOUR GUIDE.
  • Based on your values, you must create a National Anthem;
  • You need to write the lyrics of the anthem (XCR for putting it to music)
  • Based on your values,create an Oath of Allegiance to your NATION

Political

  • Create a document that OPENLY ANNOUNCES YOUR INDEPENDENCE (i.e., the American Declaration of Independence CH 4)
  • USING THE AMERICAN CONSTITUTION AS A GUIDE (CH 5), create a “LAW OF THE LAND” that specifies how your government is going to function, its branches, and POWERS.
  • Create a “Bill of Rights”; a list of individual rights that your citizens are entitled to. Go beyond what you see in our original “BILL OF RIGHTS”
  • Create a federal government. What kind of government do you have? What are its branches? What do they do?
  • Who is your leader? What kind of leader is he? How did he come to power?
  • What are the titles of your leaders?
  • How is power transferred from one leader to another?
  • What are your government’s 3 major symbols? What do these symbols mean in relation to your values?
  • Use all tools and resources available to you.

What else can you think of, that would impress the class? TEACH ME SOMETHING I DON’T KNOW. I WILL GIVE YOU EXTRA POINTS

  • YOUR PRESENTATION
  • CREATE A CEREMONY INTRODUCING YOUR NATION TO THE CLASS, WHO WILL ACT AS A “UNITED NATIONS”.
  • Poster Boards (large), PowerPoint, podcasting with GARAGEBAND, iTunes, webpage, photos, video, blogs, networking… But remember:
  • REMEMBER, TECHNOLOGY CAN BE YOUR BEST FRIEND, OR YOUR WORST NIGHTMARE, SO ALWAYS HAVE A “PLAN B”
  • Utilize at least 3 major elements above. Power point should be 1 of the elements. PAY ATTENTION TO DETAIL. YOU CAN PUT TOGETHER A POWERPOINT PRESENTATION IN 1 DAY. IF YOU DO, IT WILL SHOW!
  • ALL GROUP MEMBERS MUST PARTICIPATE IN PRESENTING NO READING!!!! IF YOU MUST, use index cards!
  • REHEARSE YOUR PRESENTATION (“DRY RUN”) BEFORE THE ACTUAL PRESENTATION.
  • YOUR PAPER
  • In a minimum of 1000 words, SUMMARIZE YOUR PRESENTATION IN A FORMAL ESSAY.
  • PRINTED, AND PRESENTED TO ME IN A PROFESSIONAL MANNER. IN A NOTEBOOK NO handwriting will be accepted! The paper must be professionally bound, with a cover sheet, and a list of resources. THE PAPER SHOULD BE POLISHED BY THE TIME I GET IT; 1 FONT. I WILL NOT ACCEPT 4 DIFFERENT STYLES, DIFFERENT PAPER. ANY HANDWRITING ON YOUR PAPER (NAMES, ETC) WILL SEVERELY HURT THIS PORTION OF YOUR PAPER. A word count will be required on the front page.
  • THE PAPER WILL BE HANDED TO ME JUST BEFORE YOU PRESENT.
