SAFIT Presents:

A Workshop on the

Taxonomy of Western North America Mayfly Nymphs

January 3 – 4, 2013

Hosted by CSULB Stream Ecology and Assessment Laboratory

California State University, Long Beach

Hall of Science Room 105

The Southwestern Association of Freshwater Invertebrate Taxonomists (SAFIT) is sponsoring a two-day workshop providing comprehensive instruction on the taxonomy, identification, and natural history of western North American Ephemeroptera (mayflies). The course instructor is:

Dr. Luke Jacobus, Assistant Professor of Biology, Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus, Columbus, IN. Dr. Jacobus’ research includes numerous facets of the order Ephemeroptera, including taxonomy and identification, DNA barcoding, phylogeny, rearing and stage associations, descriptive biology and ecology, field studies, conservation, species inventories and regional faunistics.

Attendees will receive a compete introduction to the biology and taxonomy of the Ephemeroptera of western North America as well as training in the proper preparation of specimens for study. Attendees will also receive identification manuals and supporting materials prepared by the instructor and Nick Wiersemafor this workshop, including new keys and figures.

Additionally, feel free to bring problematic specimens from any freshwater invertebrate group as there will be many specialists attending the workshop who would be willing to assist on identification.

The workshop will be held on the California State University campus in Long Beach in the new Hall of Science building. Special thanks to Dr. Dessie Underwood, the CSULB Stream Ecology and Assessment Laboratory (CSULB-SEAL), and CSULB Department of Biological Sciences for hosting this SAFIT event. Also, special thanks to SWAMP and SWRCB for their funding support.

Travel and Lodging

California State University, Long Beach, is a short distance from the Long Beach Airport (LGB), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), and John Wayne Airport (SNA). For those of you traveling from Seattle, Portland, Oakland, or Sacramento, JetBlue offers direct flights to the Long Beach airport, which is only a ten minute drive to campus. Those who are traveling from other locations, the Los Angeles International Airport or John Wayne Airport will be the next closest at only a 25 or so minute drive. The John Wayne Airport is smaller and easier to get in and out of than the Los Angeles Airport, but also tends to be a more cost prohibitive.

We have also made arrangements for discount lodging at The Pacific Inn in Seal Beach for $109.90/night (not incl. taxes). This hotel has been recently remodeled and is only a five minute drive to campus, for those renting a car. The Pacific Inn has also been kind enough to offer us complimentary shuttle service to and from campus as well as to and from the Long Beach airport. This hotel is located only a few blocks from the beach as well as downtown Seal Beach, which has many shops, pubs and restaurants for your pleasure. We have blocked 30 rooms for January 2nd – 6th for those who wish to stay at this hotel. For those not staying during the entirety of those dates, the hotel will make adjustments when you make your reservations. Please contact The Pacific Inn directly at (866) 466-0300 to make reservations and mention that you are with SAFIT. These rooms will only be available to us at the discounted rate until December 2nd, 2012 at 5 pm, so please make your reservations early.
