Tangafresh limited

In September 1985, through the Dutch-Tanzanian bilateral program in smallholder dairy extension services, cross bred animals were introduced to 7 rural households. Through this aid program farmers were taught and encouraged to keep dairy cattle. In 1992 the program emphasized on farmer’s organization, milk marketing and input supply. This led to the registration of the Tanga Dairies Co-operative union (TDCU). As the number of participating farmers increased so did the milk production leading to raw milk problems. In 1996 a group of Dutch farmers entered into joint venture with TDCU to start Tanga Fresh so that branded milk could be sold in the market. The old 15,000 ltrs per day plant could no longer handle the volume and thus with new investments in an unused dairy building on a 20 acre land was acquired. With adequate rehalibilitation and equipping the plant with state of art machinery, production commenced in mid 2009.

The dairy farmers in Tanga Region organize themselves in primary societies which run the milk collecting centres. They are entrusted with receiving quality milk from the farmers which is then chilled in bulk chillers ready for transportation to the factory for the processing.
