Taking Notes Assignment #1

Directions: Use this assignment sheet to guide you through taking notes on chapter 1. Do not write on this sheet. Only write in your green history spiral or composition book. You can also find a copy of this sheet posted to the homework section of my portolams.org webpage, as well as on Jupitered.com.

  1. Read the first page of chapter 1. When you finish, copy the chapter number and title. Be sure to capitalize all words in titles. Highlight. Skip a line and write the section number and title. Highlight.
  2. Write the word Purpose in red, and then write the chapter purpose. You will find the purpose, in this chapter, in the last paragraph of page 5.
  3. Be sure to take notes on or copy any important technical terms or vocabulary on this page. That includes anything in bold, a different color, in parentheses, italicized, and any appositives. Here’s some help below.
  4. Write a citation from this page that tells what the study of ancient history concerns. Be sure to copy the entire sentence or sentences and red pen underline key vocabulary/technical terms. Lead into your citation and enclose what you copied from the book in quotation marks. (You can “lead in” to your citation like this: According to section 1.1 Introduction, ___)
  5. There is a vocabulary word in the 2nd paragraph. You can tell it’s a vocabulary word because it’s in parenthesis. Be sure to copythe definition, red pen underline the word in your notes, and highlight the meaning. You can also add the meaning in your own words.
  6. You won’t usually take many notes on the introduction, so that’s it.
  7. Read section 1.2, and then copy the section number and title and highlight them.
  8. Skip a line and start your notes. Be sure to note any vocabulary or technical vocabulary. (Red pen underline word and highlight definition.)
  9. You can take traditional notes on each social scientist or you can make a labeled chart. If you make a chart, your columns should be type of social scientist, what they study, how they study it, why they study.
  10. Don’t forget to note vocabulary, red pen underline, and highlight meaning.
  11. Read the rest of the chapter; note any vocabulary, but nothing else.
  12. Take a closer look: Look carefully at the visual text/picture and caption for section 1.2. What’s right about the picture and caption? What’s wrong with the picture and caption? What is missing from this page that you will need to add to your notes?
