Summary of job

The National Citizen Service (NCS) is a flagship policy at the heart of the coalition Government’s vision for building a Big Society. After a successful pilot period, the programme will continue bring together 16 year olds from different backgrounds in a programme of challenge, service and learning. NCS aims to support participants’ personal and social development and helping them develop the confidence, skills and attitudes they need to take on active roles in their communities and develop themselves for their own future.

As an NCS Programme Support Worker, you will assist the NCS Coordinator to organise NCS delivery in High peak, Amber Valley and Derbyshire Dale

Organisational Relationships

You will report directly to the Local NCS Coordinator. You will work closely with other NCS Project Support Workers, sessionals and volunteers in your team and in the wider Catch22 service. You will also help to maintain good working relationships with colleagues working for other NCS partners in East Midlands,England, to ensure potential disruptions are avoided. Along with the NCS Coordinator, you will also build and develop relationships key organisations and individuals in the local area.

Main Duties and Accountabilities

  1. Work with the NCS Coordinator and other Catch22 colleagues in developing, organising, planning and delivering all six phases of NCS (delivered a minimum of four times per year), including pre-programme engagement, two residentials, social action planning & delivery, graduation events and post-NCS activity.
  1. Assist the regional recruitment team in the recruitment of young people for NCS and in retaining their engagement.
  1. Engage and build positive relationships with young people and their parent/carers to provide effective support on a one-to-one or group basis to achieve NCS outcome targets.
  1. Ensure programme content is relevant tothe local community and builds on existing relationships with partner individuals and organisations in order to provide young people with aquality NCS experience, ensuring they learn community and citizenship values within their local environment.
  1. Record daily activity across delivery of the local NCS programme, including recruitment information, participant contact and outcomes during the programme, and ensure these are fully up to date in time for regular reports to the Catch22 NCS national team.
  1. Devise and deliver six full-time residential weeks to ensure that NCS aims and objectives are met and provide participants with a challenging experience that fuels personal and social development
  1. Help to raise awareness of NCS locally and participate in publicity events promoting the project at local level and increasing the profile of Catch22 and NCS.
  1. Help to develop opportunities for NCS graduates to continue involvement in a social action project after graduation and ensure that graduates are made aware of and encouraged to take up nationally brokered opportunities offered through Catch22.
  1. Maintain productive working relationships with other NCS colleagues to facilitate smooth running of the programme in the region.
  1. Assist in ensuring in-kind funding opportunities are maximised and on or above target.
  1. Assist the NCS Coordinator to ensure all necessary and appropriate safeguarding, data handling, heath & safety and other legal requirements are in place to protect NCS participants and staff
  1. Attend regular supervision sessions and all compulsory training events, both for Catch22 and NCS to enable all duties to be carried out effectively.

Other

  • You will be required to work 4 full-time residential weeks over the summer. You will be required take on the responsibilities outlined in the Seasonal Wave Manager Role.
  • To make sure that you read, are familiar with, and follow all Catch22 policies and procedures and to access Catch22’s intranet at least once a month to update yourself with any new or amended policies or procedures.
  • To act as an ambassador for Catch22, upholding and promoting our corporate values.
  • To undertake any other duties which can be reasonably expected of you within the level of your job.
  • This post will involve regular travel around the UK and some overnight stays. It will also involve some evening and weekend working

Criteria / Essential / Desirable
Qualifications and
Experience / Minimum 5 GCSE’s at “C” or above or equivalent
Substantial experience of working directly with young people from a wide variety of backgrounds
Experience of planning, delivery and evaluation of activities for and with young people
Experience of working in a residential setting with young people from a wide variety of backgrounds
Experience of supporting and leading volunteers and sessional workers
Experience and understanding of Health and Safety, Safeguarding and data handling practices / Professional qualification in a relevant discipline e.g. Youth and Community Work, Social Work, Education, Counselling, Health, or Sports
Coaching qualifications
Experience and understanding of the issues affecting young people at risk of social exclusion/offending
Experience of working in partnership with a variety of agencies to achieve agreed outcomes
Experience of youth-led programme development and participative techniques
Knowledge / Knowledge of relevant youth policies, legislation and the wider youth agenda.
Skills and Abilities / Ability to communicate effectively at all levels, orally and in writing
Ability to use IT effectively
Ability to work on your own initiative to an agreed action plan
Ability to organise your own work routines effectively with a minimum of supervision and support
Ability to handle sensitive and confidential issues with tact and diplomacy
