Suggested work program
The chapters of the textbook are in an order that considers the developing nature of knowledge and understanding. Chapter 1 – Introducing science is a foundation chapter and the knowledge, understanding and skills that students develop as they work through the chapter are used and reinforced in all the other chapters.
Understandings developed in Chapter 2 – Staying alive related to the role of living things in the environment are revisited in Chapter 7 –Use it again and Chapter 9 – Energy converters.
Similarly understandings developed in Chapter 3 – Changing materials related to physical and chemical changes will support students’ understating of concepts developed in Chapter 6 – Tomorrow’s weather; Chapters 7 – Use it again; and Chapter 8 – Water.
Ideas from Chapter 4 – Big changes flow through into Chapter 6 – Tomorrow’s weather.
The following concept map demonstrates the linkages.
Taking these linkages into account it is logical to start any work program with the activities in Chapter 1.
Any one of Chapters 2, 3 and 4 could follow. In the following work program the decision was made to work on chapter 2 since it begins with material that should be more familiar to students.
Chapter 10 was left until the end of the two years because it takes a maturity of thought to understand that the building blocks of living things are microscopic cells.
The effect is that the program works through the text in the order that the chapters are presented.
The amount of time that schools devote to science differs considerably. The following suggested work program is based on students spending a minimum of two hours per week on science related activities.
The final decision about what to include and the time taken for the various topics and activities is made by the teacher taking into account the interests and ability levels of the students in the class.
