The Humanities Honours Scholarships – 2015
Value: R20,000 - R80,000
Tenure: 1 year only
Application criteria:
  • Students who have applied to do a one-year Honour’s programme with an academic department in the Faculty of Humanities in 2015 are encouraged to apply for this award even if their outcome of the application has not been finalised yet. Awards offered are valid and will be confirmed once formal notification has been received of acceptance into the programme.
  • Merit and/or Financial Need awards can be applied for. Financial need will be considered in cases where an applicant’s gross family income and/or income from all sources is less than R200, 000 per annum. If eligible for this category, proof will need to be submitted with the application.
  • Declaration that a student is financially independent of his/her family does not qualify her/him for needs-based support. Such students may, however, qualify for a merit-based award.
  • Financial need consequent on life-style choices (dependents, choice of housing, etc.), does not qualify applicants for needs-based support. Such students may, however, be eligible for a merit-based award.
How to apply:
  1. Please complete UCT Form 10a - 2015 which is available at the Postgraduate Centre & Funding Office and on-line at The completed form needs to be returned with the following required documentation.
  2. Academic Transcripts. If the applicant is still completing the final year, then see Note 1 below.
  3. Certified Copy of ID Book or passport.
  4. A letter from an academic department confirming acceptance into the Honours programme – conditional on final results.
  5. If eligible on the basis of financial need, details and proof of family income and support from all sources must be provided.
Late and/or incomplete applications i.e. missing any of the required documentation noted in 1-5 above will not be considered.
Closing date: 31 October 2014
Awards will be made known by 31 December 2014
Note 1: Deadline for the submission of full 3rd year results: 3 December 2014
Note 2: Humanities applicants who intend applying for this scholarship and for general UCT funding in the Humanities need NOT complete a second Form10A as one completed form submitted will be used for both scholarships.
The University of Cape Town is not able to provide full-cost support to applicants.
