Course Description: This 3-day class is designed for GIS users with natural resource interests; this class includes resource management and wildlife scenarios, but will be helpful to anyone wanting to learn GIS. This class teaches the core functionality of ArcGIS while introducing advanced topics, and is appropriate for new GIS users and for GIS users wanting more in-depth instruction on core skills. This course is based on real projects, with an emphasis on the skills needed to successfully and efficiently complete your projects.

Topics include: Using ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcToolbox; Working with layers, data frames, and maps; Projecting data between coordinate systems; Working with XY events; Creating and using symbology in ArcMap; Labeling features, working with annotation; Selecting and querying features; Creating Layer Files; Managing and editing tables; Creating layouts in ArcMap; Editing data and managing edit sessions; Using Geodatabases; Spatial Analysis tools; Georeferencing images; Using Excel in ArcGIS.

Instructor: John Schaeffer is the lead instructor, consultant, and analyst for Juniper GIS Services and has over 21 years of experience working with and teaching GIS and related technologies to a wide variety of audiences. He is also a GIS Professional (GISP) as certified by the GIS Certification Inst., an ESRI Certified Instructor and an ESRI Certified Desktop Associate.

Karen Beardsley, PhD and GISP, serves as the Managing Director for the Information Center for the Environment in the Department of Environmental Science and Policy, UC Davis. She has 25 years of experience working with GIS at the UCD Center for the Environment and international conservation organizations. She has taught GIS for UC Davis Extension since the mid-1990s.
