Star Trek Collecting
By ADM Mark Williams
Trek is BACK!! And of course that means that Trek collecting is back! There is a rush of items popping up everywhere, many where Trek items haven’t been seen since the 90’s. Toys R Us is back in the market carrying items from both the new Star Trek movie and items from all the different Star Trek series.
One example of a stellar item coming soon is from Diamond Select Toys. After many delays to get it right, the Enterprise D will be out soon. I received an advance copy of the ship and I can tell you, for the money, it can’t be beat. The best deal on the Enterprise-D can be found online at
The Captain’s Prerogative
By Captain Lora Holman
/ The pride that one gets from carrying out great accomplishments is overwhelming. I did not complete these accomplishments alone, but rather, with a group, a team, and a family! I am so grateful for having a club with such phenomenal members in it!My work as captain has been an easy one so far. I feel as if I am playing when I work with our members. Everything falls right into place with ease, due to the wonderful contributions that they make. I would personally like
to praise a few who put a lot of extra work into keeping this ship up and moving. Admiral Mark Williams and Admiral Roy Jackson made sure that our Movie premier fundraiser was a success. Again, they aren't the only ones making this group run so smoothly. Without members like Fleet Captain Cyndi Jackson, CommanderBobby Erwin,Captain Misty Jackson,Fleet Captain Gary Barclay, and LT Athena Holman, to name a few,we would not be able to continue the great work that our ship does.
We have many special events planned for the year and we are making great strides to make a difference. There is no doubt in my mind that we ARE the best ship in the system. I can't say thank you to you all enough. It is a pleasure being the Captain of the U.S.S. Endeavour, Thank You!
EDITOR’S NOTE: A special congratulations goes out to Admiral Stacy Baker (formerly Stacy Mulder). She married a great guy, Robert Baker on Saturday, May 16th. No one heard if it was a Klingon wedding or a Betazoid wedding. Klingon weddings are long and boring, but at least you get to keep your clothes on. Either way, the captain and crew of the Endeavour wish them the best life has to offer in all their future endeavors (no pun intended, but we will take what we can get).
Gary Again
The true gamers will want to check out the May/June issue of the EGSA Softworks newsletter, The Prospector, Vol. 3 Number 3. You will undoubtedly recognize our very own Gary “Mr. Spock” Barclay on the cover. After reading about all the new games and software available to gamers, and giving some great reasons to check out the entire second half of their newsletter is devoted to our man Gary, along with the USS Endeavour, Starfleet Command, and Starbase 06. In an interview format, Gary talks about the Endeavour’s fundraisers, the Starbase 06 float in the midnight parade, the prospect of the new movie’s influence, and his gaming choices. I know a lot of members are gamers. It would greatly benefit them to check out the aforementioned website.
Bowling All Summer
Just like last year, Cooper’s Sports Bowl on 53rd Street in Anderson is offering group discount cards, and the Endeavour purchased another one. With this one card, all members of the Endeavour can bowl for one dollar a game. They can also get one-dollar shoe rentals and many other one-dollar specials on food and drink. We had many great times last summer and this summer looks to have even more. So, keep your eye on the emails for upcoming bowling get-togethers. We may even throw in some great contests on the side. Also, if anyone wants to just go out for a family night of bowling, they can get the Endeavour card from our illustrious leader, CAPT Holman.
U.S.S. Endeavour's Star Trek Movie Premier Fundraiser
By: Captain Gary Barclay
The Endeavour held a fundraiser for the Hopewell Center at the Anderson Indiana Mounds Mall 10 during the movie premier of Star Trek. Mark Williams and Roy Jackson constructed an exact replica of Captain Kirk's TOS command chair complete with indicator lights that light up. People had their picture taken in the command chair with a green screen behind it where a picture of the TOS U.S.S. Enterprise bridge was inserted. Then they received an 8x10 photo for a $5.00 donation for the Hopewell Center. BEST WAY DISPOSAL donated the ink and photo paper so 100% of the donations went to the Hopewell Center.
Mark Williams took the pictures while his daughter, Sarah, collected donations. Roy and Misty Jackson printed photos.
Twenty U.S.S. Endeavour members and friends wore Star Trek costumes and posed in pictures upon request. This is a list of the people and what they had worn:
1. Lora Holman: TNG Klingon uniform 2. Athena Holman: TNG Romulan uniform 3. Jamie Plake: TNG red uniform 4. Lisa Walker: Voyager yellow uniform 5/6. Stacy "Mulder" Baker/Jonathon Henson: Enterprise jump suit 7. Robert Baker: TNG admiral red uniform 8. Roy Jackson: TNG admiral white dress uniform 9.Cyndi Jackson: Vulcan Senator 10. Rob Irwin: Andorian in TNG yellow uniform 11. Mark Williams: Star Trek TMP Admiral Kirk uniform 12. Sarah Williams: TOS blue uniform 13. Richard Burk: TNG movie Captain Picard uniform 14. Gary Barclay: New Movie Spock 15. Ian Barclay: New Movie Kirk 16. Brandon Barclay: TNG yellow uniform 17. Karl Williams: TOS yellow uniform 18. Rachelle Williams: TOS red mini dress uniform. 19/20. Kevin Hollingsworth/ Jennifer Cooper: WOK uniform.
Hopewell Center
By FCAPT Cyndi Jackson
On Thursday, May 14, 2009, I was present to see the end result of the efforts the USS Endeavour’s Mounds Mall fund-raiser as Hopewell Center’s Client Council was presented $300 by our captain. Actually, I participated in the fund-raiser and it was awesome watching the excitement in the eyes of the fans as they were; 1) going to the movie; 2) coming from the movie; 3) anticipating sitting in the chair; or 4) realized the Tribble on site actually moved! Just the idea that these were both young and elderly people amazed me. That and the idea that they liked having “Captain Kirk, Spock, (both young and old) Romulans, Klingons, and Andorians present and actually recognized them AND wanted pictures with them….. I tell you, fandom is not dead in the Anderson, Indiana area!
Okay, where was I? Oh, that’s right, returning to Hopewell to present them with money raised by our group was the greatest. Client Council is a self-supporting group and any funds given to them goes directly to them. We were invited to their Spring Fling that included Spaghetti Dinner and a Dance. We skipped the Dinner but were still offered food when we arrived. Everyone was having a great time and we were proud to have our picture taken with this fine group of people. Thanks USS Endeavour, I am proud to be a part of such a caring group of people that reach out to the community to keep the community going in such a wonderful way. My only regret is that the whole county has seen that aweful picture of me on the front page of the Anderson Herald-Bulletin (Editor’s Note: see Bobby Irwin’s article). You all know that if I knew they were taking a photo, I would have smiled.
Building the Chair-Mark’s Version
After several weeks of putting it off, Roy and I decided to meet up one Sunday afternoon and start building a replica of Capt Kirk’s original bridge chair. The idea had been tossed around for some time but once we decided that we wanted to use it as part of the Star trek XI movie premier to raise funds for the Hopewell Center, we had to get started.
The first day we found rather fast that we were in dire need of some saw horses to work on. So much for a grand building launch. After what would turn out to be the first of many trips to just about everywhere for this or that, we headed off to Menards for some sheets of plywood. The plans, so nicely enlarged to a one-to-one scale by Roy, were acquired from a member of my message board that had studied the design of the original chair in great detail. This helped immensely, and although they were not complete, they provided enough detail that with careful measuring, the missing pieces could be figured out. The first day was more or less spent cutting out the many pieces.
I worked on the chair every day after work trying to assemble as many pieces as I could before Roy came back the following weekend. That first week, I assembled the two supports, the base and picked up a bearing from a Lazy Susan. That weekend Roy and I built the part I call the cradle and started on the seat. During the following week, I assembled the side pieces only to find that I had assembled then incorrectly. After some thinking, I figured out a way and I made some adjustments to make the side pieces one inch wider. I know that doesn’t sound like much, but it really changed the look of the piece. Roy went to Florida that weekend and I started cutting up the masonite to skin the outer body.
During this time I was looking everywhere for the right color to paint the chair. I went to every store in town and I was about to give up having way too much time in it, when through a lucky call, I found the color I was looking for at a True Value Hardware store. I still had to drive to both the North and the South stores to get enough cans of paint. From this point on, I worked on the body work and painting and Roy worked on the seat part. We placed the finished seat in the painted chair just 3 days before it was due to be at the Mounds Mall 10 Theater.
Costume Contests Series: Article 3
Vulkon Columbus 2007
By: FCAPT Gary Barclay
I had talked Mark Williams into portraying Yoda as I portrayed Luke Skywalker. We put together “The Luke And Yoda Show” for the 2007 Columbus Ohio Vulkon convention. I had a Luke Skywalker hair cut, costume and lightsaber already from portraying him in the Anderson Indiana 4th of July Midnight Parade. Mark used a Yoda mask and a Jedi robe that was left over from the parade. Mark pinned green feet to the robe by his knees. He then got down on his knees and looked like a little Yoda.
Mark stayed in the middle of the stage as I moved about performing Jedi moves with my lightsaber. Every so often, I would stop and ask Yoda “Am I a Jedi yet”. Yoda would then reply “No. Practice you will”! Finally after asking several times Yoda acquiesced “If shut up you will. Then Jedi you are”! I, as Luke Skywalker, then broke out into a happy dance. The audience was laughing and applauding. We wound up winning 2nd place. A little boy dressed as Captain Kirk had won 1st place so you really can't compete with kids and animals.

Adopt-A-Highway
On May 30th, the Endeavour changed their monthly meeting from Reader Copies on Scatterfield Road in Anderson to the Hi-way Café located on State Road 9 and 900 North in Madison County. The reason for this change in venue was to ready ourselves for our annual road clean-up. The Endeavoiur is responsible for two miles of State Road 9 North from County Road 600 N to 800N. When you include the median, it is more like three miles of highway.
We intended to start the meeting at 8am sharp, but our captain had numerous problems with her truck. The biggest problem was when she ran out of gas. Surprisingly, Mark and Gary were the first ones on the scene and they had to wait for everyone else. When you consider the meeting was moved to such an early time, we had an excellent turnout.
After a very productive meeting that included discussions for an away mission to Holiday World, our involvement in the next two Indiana conventions, and tons of other activities, we wrapped up the meeting and started cleaning the Highway by 10am.
Only ten members stayed for the cleanup, but we finally developed a system that utilizes teamwork for a fun and efficient process. We now leave a truck at one end of the highway and start everyone at the other end. We divide into groups of three or four and designate one person in each group as the bag holder. We then walk together and let the ones without the bags use extension grabbers to pick up the debris and toss it in the bag. This way, we move at an almost constant walking pace, which only takes about two and a half hours to complete.
We used to divide into two groups, start one group at 600N and the other at 800N. We would meet at 700N. This method seems practical, but we found that over half our time was spent standing and fighting to get the bag open in the wind. It usually took three and a half to four hours to finish. We also learned our lesson about when to do the trash pickup. The first year, we tried it in August and it got so hot, one member had to sit in a vehicle and drink water to keep from passing out. Another year, we tried it in April. That tie wasn;t too bad, except we got rained on for part of the time. I think we finally got it right by planning for the end of May.
