St. Michael & St. Francis Bulletin June 28th & 29th, 2014 Pastor: Fr. Steve Schaftlein

Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles

THE NAME GAME

Today’s solemnity might have been “Saints Simon and Saul” if it hadn’t been for some renaming. There are numerous examples from the Bible of people being given new names to indicate their new status in God’s plan of salvation. This practice begins with Abraham, and we see the fruit of that in today’s renaming of Simon as Peter when he makes his great profession of faith in Jesus as Messiah (Christ) and Son of God. Saul, though Acts recounts a significant conversion experience for him, is renamed rather silently by the New Testament. Even though the author of the Acts of the Apostles occasionally slips and still calls him “Saul” after his conversion experience, his new name—most likely intended by the New Testament to differentiate his Christian mission from his life as a Jew—occurs most frequently in Acts, and exclusively in his own letters, as “Paul.” The naming of Peter is reminiscent of our own naming at baptism, when our own faith in Jesus as Christ was proclaimed. Even though most of us never go through a changing of our proper name later in life (though this was characteristic of religious profession for many years), a bit of reflection will help us to discern the ways in which God has called us anew or named us again for our own role in proclaiming the Good News.

BOTH/AND, NOT EITHER/OR

It’s not surprising that, as we read through the New Testament, Peter tended to be a stronger advocate of adhering to the ways of religious praxis inherited from the Jewish tradition. Paul, meanwhile, led the church to a life of more freedom within religious law, focused more on faith and the Spirit. Wisely, the celebrations of these two saints, bedrock of the earthly church, are combined, for the Church has always lived and witnessed best when we have respected and honored our heritage, customs, and traditions of faith, yet remained open to change and ongoing revelation from on high. The Body of Christ, in this way, is the same as any other body: it remains the same body in many ways, but also must seek ongoing nourishment, encounter illness, and inevitably be altered through growth. The Holy Spirit has provided admirable examples for us in the persons of Peter and Paul. As they—grounded in their faith, named and called for Jesus Christ’s mission—sought to spread the gospel in every place at every hour, let us likewise joyfully join that same mission.

Today’s Readings: Acts 12:1–11; Psalm 34:2–9; 2 Timothy 4:6–8, 17–18; Matthew 16:13–19

The Pastor’s Corner

An Honor And A Privilege

It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your pastor for these past 10 and 1/2 years. We have spiritually grown together through some unusual times and experience. In all God has blessed both St. Michael and St. Francis Xavier through your generosity and fellowship. I know that you will welcome Fr. Harry Tully with great generosity. I will treasure each of you in both my memory and prayers. May God Bless You!

Anglo & Latino FamilyPair Program
Through Baptism
We Share The Same Family Tree! /

Later in the summer we will begin a program to help Anglos and Latinos to get to know one another. We will be asking families to voluntarily pair up with another family. On a regular basis (weekly) the pairs will be asked to share together in some way. Perhaps attend mass together, have a cookout, go to Charlestown State Park, or simply stop by for a visit. There will occasionally be organized opportunities for the family pares to share with all of those in the program on a parish level. Our goal is to nurture understanding and unity among our parishioners. Contact me if you are interested in being a

part of this program.

Question of the Week

Ordinary Time: For a large part of the liturgical year, we devote ourselves to listening to the mystery of Christ in all its aspects unfold as we seek God’s truth and understanding.

Theme: You are Peter, and I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven.

Step 1: Listen to the Word: As you listen to the Word What single word or phrase really struck you? What image do you take away from this reading?

Step 2: Look into Your Life.

Children: Who do you say the Jesus is?

Youth: How does the way uou live your life show that you are a follower of Christ?

Adult: Before the Resurrection, Peter denied Jesus three times. But in today’s gospel, we hear about a Peter who has unshakable faith. He clearly proclaims that Jesus is Christ, the son of the living God. What can you do to strengthen your faith and draw nearer to Christ?

St. Michael and St. Francis Xavier Sacrament Preparation: A child (grade 1 through high school) must be enrolled and attend Faith Formation classes the YEAR BEFORE and YEAR of receiving the Sacrament of First Reconciliation, First Eucharist or Confirmation..
