MINUTES
The Meeting was called to order at 10:05 by President, Terry Hanna (Kate Andrews)
1. Moved by Karl Heibert (Lomond): to adopt the Minutes of the Oct 6, 2008 Meeting at Luigi’s, Taber. Second: John Lowry (ST Michael’s PC) CARRIED
2. Voting Strength 22 administrators, 12 school reps, 3 others. 28 of 40 schools represented
3. Business arising from last Meeting
1. Congratulations to Ken Gabruck, St Mary’s, recipient of this year’s South Zone Award of Merit
4. Communication:
1. Athletic Director and Coaches Forum at HPEC 2009 (click here for information) Terry Hanna explained the organization of the Alberta Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (AIAAA), an initiative of ASAA. AD’s are able to take two courses at HPEC for certification. Registration for the courses is limited to 120.
2.ASAA Rugby memo was sent to schools. Craig Patton (FP Walshe) explained that Safe Rugby clinics will be offered in Lethbridge and Medicine Hat (dates to be announced) and ASAA encourages every school with a rugby team to have at least one coach certified.
5. Financial Statement. Invoices were faxed to schools. Moved by Scott Howes (Medicine Hat High): to accept the financial statement. Second: Toby Boulet (Winston Churchill) CARRIED
6. Reports / Information on Zone Competitions
1. Cross Country: Marg read the report from Darryl Smith (Eagle Butte). Recommendations included 1.clearer, larger maps 2. Coaches and athletes must be there for the walk-through 3. Two timing sets so that a race can s be started while waiting for the last runners to complete the previous race.
2. Volleyball: reports received from 1A Boys, 1A Girls, 2A Boys and 4A Boys and Girls. Other hosts (2A Girls FP Walshe, 3A Girls Willow Creek and 3A Boys Cardston), please send reports to Marg asap.
2. Football – Tier I Raymond (no banner); Tier II Medicine Hat High; Tier III Winston Churchill; Tier IV WR Myers
3. Curling: Zones hosted by St Mary’s at Taber Curling Club Feb 24, 25
4. Cheerleading: no schools were registered this year
5. Wrestling: on-line registration deadline Feb 1 (min 1 wrestler) with add-ons until Feb 15
6. Basketball: Banners and medals were given to the hosts. Duane Konynenbelt has created a Zone BB web site: All 1A, 2A and 3A draws are there, as well as other tournament information, results, etc. Coaches are asked to look at the draws now and give Duane any feed-back. It is important that coaches send their remaining game stats to Glen, Duane and Terry since the last ASAA ranking period before Provincials is Feb 15. Note: high attendance games will be played on the main court to accommodate seating. There will be extra supervision for the Thursday – Saturday games. Staff members will be given a shirt to wear during their team’s game(s) on Thurs - Sat so that they will be a VISIBLE presence and not just a “fan in the stands”. They are expected to supervise their fans. ForProvincial information, check ASAA website and follow the links there.
7. Badminton: Wednesday, April 22 in Lethbridge. Easter holidays is the week before Zones, so District entries will need to be to Marg by Thursday April 9.
8. Track & Field: May 27 (Wed) at Medicine Hat. District entries to Marg by Friday May 22.

8. Provincial Bids:
1. FP Walshe : 2009 Rugby - Boys and Girls ,Tier I and II (at Sherring Athletic Park) Chairpersons: Craig Patton and John Seaman This bid was withdrawn due to a conflict with a soccer tournament which had also booked the field.
2. LCI: 2009 4A Boys and Girls Volleyball Chairperson: Deb Yanota, Randy Joevenazzo CARRIED (on condition of approval by SAIAC) NOTE: SAIAC approved this bid
3. SAIAC: 2009 4A Boys and Girls Basketball Chairperson: Dave Wells CARRIED (on condition of approval by SAIAC) NOTE: SAIAC approved this bid, with the games to be held in Cardston and Raymond
9. Other Business:
1. T&F Officials Clinic in Medicine Hat Sat May 2 1:00 pm. No cost. Register with Marg.
2. Toby Boulet reported that U of L Track will be ready this fall. Marg reminded delegates that South Zone will host 2010 ASAA T&F Provincials and, if Lethbridge is the host, the Meet Manager must be from Lethbridge.
