Content Note
This fonds includes the Executive, Promotional and Concert files of the Windsor
Symphony Society, spanning the years from 1929 to 1988. The bulk of the Executive
files are from the early 1970s to the late 1980s. Programmes for most of the periods
1929-1941 and 1950-1988 make up most of the Concert files.
The files are divided into six series: Executive Files 1950-1988; Concert Files
1929-1988; Promotional Files [1974?]-1988; Outreach 1979-1987; Photographs
[193-?]-1988 and Audio Visual Records [1983?]-[1988?].
All photographs and slides have been transferred to the Photograph Collection of
the Municipal Archives. Researchers are also directed that Copy Negatives 8 through 10
are of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra.
The audio-visual records have not been processed.
In processing the collection, attention was given to papers directly relating to the
WSS. In the cases of files relating to outside organizations, such as the Ontario Arts
Council, only those papers relating directly to Windsor activities and concerns have been
kept. Researchers are advised that many of the provincial arts and orchestral
organizations have transferred their files to the Public Archives of Ontario (Toronto).

Historical Note
The history of the Windsor Symphony predate World War II. According to a
full-page article in the Windsor Star on Saturday, 22 April 1939, several earlier attempts
had been made to sustain an orchestra in Windsor, but the first local symphony with much staying power was founded in the fall of 1937 at the home of Mrs. W.T. Balman in Windsor. With the sponsorship of the Senior Mary Grant Society a community orchestra of 40 to 50 musicians gave its first concert in April 1938. It called itself the Windsor Symphony and served under conductor Peter C. Allan, with associate conductor Fred G. Vallance. The Symphony rehearsed twice a week and presented one to three concerts a year at Walkerville Collegiate through 1941. During the war years, concerts were held to support bond drives and varius wartime charities. Matti Holli was often violinist and orchestra leader during this time.
The Marri Holli orchestra became widely known and in great demand. It played in the days of the “big bands” in the pavilion at Bob-LoIsland, on the Bob-Lo boats and in road houses on the Canadian side of the waterway. This situation appears to have prevailed until the mid 1940’s when two new orchestras, the Ursuline School of Music Orchestra and the Windsor Federation of Musicians Philharmonic, appeared on the Windsor scene. Matti Holli was associated with both, though neither was a dance band.
Dates are uncertain in this period. The era of the Federation of Musicians Orchestra seems to have been between 1945 and 1947. It was in 1947 that the name changed to the Windsor Symphony Orchestra, Matti Holli conductor. Before the actual formation of the Orchestra, Matti Holli an Phil Murphy appeared before City Council to request funding to continue the work that the wartime orchestra? Council provided a grant of $6,500 and the Windsor Federation of Musicians, which had much to do with the wartime orchestra, provided another $3,500 in funding.
Thus the Windsor Symphony Orchestra was born. Concerts were scheduled in Walkerville Collegiate. An era of bringing symphonic music to the citizens of Windsor had begun and has not been interrupted since. During 1948, the orchestra continued to be active giving free concerts either at Walkerville or the Tivoli theatre. Sometimes there was a collection at the door.
In the winter of 1949 the Windsor Symphony Society was formed by a group of citizens who undertook to make the orchestra a truly community organization and to take over responsibility for its financing and general well-being.
Through the next 30 years there is a discernable growth in the size of the orchestra, the standard of works performed and the caliber of soloists and guest artists appearing with the orchestra. During these years Maestro Holli not only lead the orchestra but he continued to teach in both Windsor and Detroit and to improve his own

qualifications. He founded the Windsor Junior Symphony in 1957 which later became the International Youth Orchestra. He traveled extensively and was guest conductor of orchestras in Finland, Mexico, France and Detroit.
In these “mid-years of the orchestra’s growth the Women’s Association was formed in 1956 and has since that time played a major role in the financial support of the orchestra. Grants continued from both City Council and the Federation of Musicians. In the late ‘60s and early ‘70s applications for grants were made to the Canada Council and provincial agencies set up to support the arts.
The fall of 1960 saw the orchestra move what is now its “permanent home” – The Cleary Auditorium. It left behind for ever the years of playing concerts in high school auditoriums and movie theatres.
The decade of the ‘702 saw the orchestra make great strides both financially and professionally. Talented and highly trained musicians were attracted to Windsor. In 1976, the orchestra announced to had appointed its first full time secretary-manager and with an annual budget exceeding $100,000.
Before the decade was over, however, the orchestra suffered the most tragic event of its history. On Nov. 11, 1977, Matti Holli died suddenly. The season was just beginning and the orchestra was without a leader. Quick action had to be taken to keep the symphony organization. Intact and functioning until a new leader could be found. This task was undertaken by a committee headed by Judge Bruce J.S. Macdonald, a former president of the society and a longtime supporter of the orchestra. Guest conductors were booked to finish the 1977-78 season. A search committee, also headed by Judge Macdonald, arranged for a series of conductors to lead the orchestra during the 1978-79 season.
Laszlo Gati was chosen as the new conductor and music director and began work with the orchestra in the spring of 1979. The summer of 1979 saw the establishment of a new support group for the Symphony, the Junior Women’s Association. The Windsor Symphony Orchestra began a new decade with great expectations and new determination to build a great orchestra on the 32 year legacy left by Matti Holli.
In 1985, Laszlo Gati had a number of health problems, resulting in his resignation as Music Director and Conductor. A Search Committee was struck to find a replacement. During the 1985-1986 season, Timothy Vernon took over duties as Acting Music Director and Conductor. At the end of the season, Dwight Bennett was appointed Music Director and Conductor, ushering in a new phase in the history of the Orchestra.
The fonds end with the 1987-1988 season, the Orchestra’s 40th anniversary.
