St. Joseph MO. Juneteenth Committee
Dear High School Senior,
The 2016St. Joseph MO. Juneteenth Committee would like to invite you to apply for our annual scholarship. We know that in these times that higher education is very expensive and that every dollar counts. Annually our committee offers this opportunity to all African-American Seniors to help ease this burden. The guidelines for applying for our scholarship are as follows:
- Applicant must complete and return the attached application by the deadline.
- Applicant must type an essay and adhere to the guideline stated on the application.
- Applicant must be an African-American Senior within the St. Joseph School District area schools.
- High school applicant must matriculate at a postsecondary institution in August/September immediately following high school graduation. College or postsecondary applicant must return to his/her previous institution or enroll at another postsecondary institution in the ensuing fall semester. Failure to enroll at the designated time will automatically forfeit all consideration to the scholarship.
- Successful applicant will be notified by the Scholarship Committee and mailed to applicant’s home address after the applicant has provided evidence of enrollment.
- Awardees will represent as Mr. and Miss Juneteenth in the Juneteenth parade and must be available for appearance at Senior Night and the parade in order to receive scholarship as well.

Part III –Essay
Topic: “Juneteenth: Why is it still relevant today?”
Reflect on what is Juneteenth and why it is important that people in the United States and other countries continue to cultivate knowledge and appreciation of their freedoms not only on Juneteenth but everyday.
Essay Rules:
Essay format must meet the following requirements:
- Must be typed in 12 pt. or 14 pt. Times New Roman or Arial font.
- Double spaced
- A bibliography must list all references used. Bibliography must in MLA format.
- Word count cannot be less than 400 words or more than 500.
- Essays must have a title and stay on the topic. They will be judged on the correct use of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and originality. Maps, drawings, pictures, and graphics should notbe included.
- Work must be original, plagiarism of any kind will be cause for disqualification.
Deadline: May 15, 2016
Entries received after May 15th will not be eligible and will not be returned.
