Procedures for completing the Thinking Map

  1. The students will be divided into groups to create a thinking map and a brief presentation to answer one of the following state government legislative topics. Groups will choose a thinking map that best fits the topic to be explained. Groups will use the Standards and essential questions.
  2. Groups will pick one of the topics from the list below:

  • Religious liberty
  • Medical marijuana
  • Budget:Economy and jobs
  • Immigration
  • Alcohol
  • Education Failing schools
  • Healthcare
  • Casinos
  • Guns on Campus

3. Compare and contrast the 2017 legislation and connect the legislation with the sections of the Standards and essential questions.

4. Analyze the importance of the legislation to the citizens of the state of Georgia.

5. All sub-topics should be annotated (meaning, it should describe how the event/bill/legislation on the line is significant and important) and described in detail. The Thinking map should reflect the status and success level of the legislation (did the bill make it to a law).

6. Remember to provide evidence from an article or articles that will allow you to argue the significance of the evidence for the legislation.

7. Present to the classmates in small group rotation. Individuals will peer evaluate the thinking map and presentation. Scholars will answer questions about the assignment and create a question during the presentation.

8. Groups will use the 18x24 white paper to draw and write the thinking map. All information should be on one side of the paper not exceeding the 18x24 size.

9. Enter a bibliography entry for your article. Use the back of your paper to write your entry.

10. Create a title on the front and MLA format on the back.

  1. During the discussion of the state legislation, pay close attention to the analysis from the presenter. Do you agree with or disagree with the presenter’s analysis of the reasons that this legislation is a benefit to the citizens? Explain your response and as evidence provide a quote from the thinking map that supports your argument.

  1. Pick three ideas of the presenter’s discussion of the legislation to explain why you think these ideas would be the most important. Rank them from most important to least important.
  1. From the presentation what was the most compelling argument about the legislation? Did the presenter make a persuasive argument for their position?
