These vignettes will present real dilemmas that encourage rich conversation about classroom occurrences, interventions to use in discussion and possible alternative solutions. Summary: This mini-course will provide a follow up to deepen understanding of how to apply Thinking Maps (TMs) in all aspects of content area reading and writing. Teachers will work collaboratively to share current concerns and successes with specific map applications, to identify the cognitive skills in graphic organizers specific to instructional programs in order to bridge/replace them w/TMs. They will learn to apply TMs to strategies for academic vocabulary development and word study. The follow-up focus will also include using TMs as organizational patterns for taking notes more effectively in fictional and expository text. They will explore examples of how to apply the maps to visualize the following reading comprehension skills: analyzing text features, identifying author’s purpose, previewing text, predicting, inferencing, distinguishing between fact and opinion, and summarizing. Teachers will learn how to enhance the writing process by using the maps for prewriting, editing, and planning and writing a research paper. Time will be provided for teachers to work collaboratively to adapt and develop TMs in their own content areas so that students can “hit the ground running” in September.
