South Hopkins “Tomcats”

(South Hopkins was originally formed in the fall of 1955 with

the consolidation of Nortonville and Mortons Gap high schools.

In the fall of 1996, South Hopkins merged with a small part of West Hopkins and

the southern half of Madisonville-North Hopkins to form Hopkins County Central.)

1984: first varsity competition season. Didn’t have a home game--the field wasn’t ready.

1983: played a junior varsity schedule and finished 6-3 under Coach Jay Cobb

1982: freshmen and sophomores played a freshman schedule and finished 3-5 under Coach Charles Beard

Beard was credited with doing a great job of laying the foundation for football at South, but announced in March of 1983 that he was leaving…saying the school board reneged on a promise to hire one assistant coach.
